Can someone explain why there is a difference in mounting a capacitor in a vertical versus horizontal orientation? Beginning minds want to know?

If you are speaking of the common type that would be used in radio/TV sets there is no requirement as to horizontally or vertical positioning.

In the old days of point to point wiring, they were all axial-lead (horizontal mounting), save for the multi-capacitance units that mounted on top of the chassis.

PCB construction caused radial (vertical mounting) single value caps to become the majority style.

Any electronic component can be mounted in any position (unless there is a unique item or two from the twenties I'm not aware of).

Tubes ( not a component per se) do have orientation specs in the tube manual

Only some tubes. It depends often on construction and filament style. Some can be mounted base up or down, others with filament pins aligned so the filaments are in the the vertical plane, and most miniature and octal/Loktal tubes it doesnt matter.

Which is why you should look in a tube manual before you tilt a chassis over on it's side. You may get a surprise if a filament sags the wrong way.

I stand corrected then, AFA certain tubes, lol. When I posted, I was thinking about the numerous portable tube sets having the chassis attached at the top of the cabinet, with the tubes mounted to it, upside down.
