Here is new one on me. I am still going through the lot of radios and came across this box about 6" x6". radio said was r-50. The box says converta Never saw one like it and it stumped me. Then I noticed that the r-50 was just stuck in this box. the box has a plug that runs into the earphone jack. Any information Please.

...sort of a 'docking station' with a larger speaker and possibly some amplification. 'Converts' your transistor radio into sort of a 'table' radio with 'bigger' sound. Does this 'Converta' stand plug in or have batteries in it?...

The radio is a Zenith Royal 50. The docking station -if it's like others of it's kind- simply consists of a passive larger speaker, connecting through the earphone jack.
Some value, but nothing major.

Nice discovery !
Been keeping eye open for a "Converta" box without radio for my early Royal 50---think it's a neat idea some manufacturers had back then... Used to mount salvaged larger speakers in cardboard boxes as a kid to connect to my small radios...
Is there a battery compartment/ switch on the box itself ? Curious if it had it's own amplifier...
John

Mr. Davis, Thanks---will be interesting to know ! That radio with Converta will possibly be one of your more valuable items if you clean it up a bit---there is one on Ebay at $45 now with several bidders & days to go: http://www.ebay.com/itm/380431719099?ss ... 1423.l2649Of course the one on Ebay is very clean & an earlier model, but it doesn't hurt to try... Good luck... John
