Found one of these today. From reading all I see on the net they were sold during WWII time to solders. I was not aware that our soldiers could own this type of equipment during war time. If not the soldiers then who did they market to? These were built in 1941, so surly parts were hard to get by then. Also read that Hallicrafters built them but did not want their own name on them. Does anyone know anything about the company or their products? Seems a little hard to believe I would like to learn more! Thanks, Bill

You are talking about the EC-1?

These received limited WPB priority as necessary to morale, and was just about the only civillian set manufactured throughout the War.

Original tube complement generally includes "M-R" marked tubes (tubes which did not meet strict military specifications and were made available to the civillian market for maintenance or replacement purposes.

The EC-1 was a glorified, multi-band AA5 with an added BFO.

Bill Halligan did not want the Hallicrafters name besmirched by associaiton with a realtively cheap, low-performance set, but the EC-1's wartime record was good enough that Hallicrafters offered a redesigned version as an entry level SWL and am set in the Post-War period under their own brand, the famous Hallicrafters S-38.

For what it's worth; I have an EC-113. A wood cased multi band Echophone
made by Hallicrafters. Six octal tubes. Has a band spreader. Perhaps it's a post
war incarnation of an EC-1 ? Never seen an EC-1.

Not to mention the famous "Hogarth" Echophone EC-1 ads seen throughout the war years.

I believe the post-war incarnation of the EC-1A was the Hallicrafters S-41G.



Then, the S-41G became the S-38.
