The local Habitat for Humanity TV recycling event for Earth Day 2012 was a big success, according to the local paper Sunday morning. 60 parking stalls worth of old TVs were dropped off for the free recycling event. By the time I got there to take pictures, they had already filled 6 semi-trailers.

Everywhere you looked, you saw hundreds of "old" TVs, computer monitors, and even lots of newer flat-screen TVs.

They either filled "Gaylords" or just shrink-wrapped them to pallets to load into the trailers.

There were some sets of interest there, but under the contract that was set up, you could not remove (or purchase) any of the donated salvage items.

Here was an old CRT and front panel of a 1950's set that someone may have saved the cabinet to "fishtank".

A few Zeniths were spotted.

They were also taking in used hi-fi. The donation piles of those were already in the trailers, but I did spot a Pioneer amp & tuner that were mistakenly tossed into a TV pile.

All in all, a very good day for the recycling effort. I thought they took in quite a few, especially considering they did a similar event just 8 months ago here. I was very pleased to not discover any old roundie color sets or rare B&W sets in the piles, as there was no way to recover them.

So, they would not let you grab anything? Too bad. I would have taken 2 or 3 things I saw in your photos.

There was certainly a 50's blonde Dumont I would have liked to save.

I took a load of junk to the landfill Saturday and observed the same thing.
They required that TV's be dropped off in a separate pile.

A large pile - I looked it over but there was nothing interesting from what I could see.

Still quite a waste. Globalization has caused newer TV technology to become so cheap that we waste these perfectly good TVs.

The donation was setup under an exclusive contract with a recycler, and the employees were forbidden to allow anything to be removed. They even had overnight security stationed in the lot.

Yeah, I would have saved a few if I could also.

Had there been a truly rare set there, I would have demanded phone numbers of "higher-ups" and try brokering a deal. Fortunately there was nothing visible of substantial value when I was there.

The blonde was a Motorola. The cabinet was in very nice condition.

That Motorola console looks scarily close to the design of the H840CK15.

Without any analog TV broadcasts, many people just trash 'em even when working fine.
I'd bet about 1/2 are still functional, maybe more.

What does Habitat for Humanity, or the recycler they contract with, do in recycling electronics?
Reason I ask is at the end 2011 in NYS they quietly passed a law making it illegal to toss your old electronics in the trash.
Quietly meaning they didn't publicize until ~ Dec 31st, so people wouldn't inundate the trash at the end of the year.

wow, what waste.

I always find it funny about all this green BS, if you want to be green simply consume less, buy good quality and keep it going by fixing the broken parts. I know I know that's not how things are made anymore, just getting it off my chest.

To bad about the motorola, That is a nice looking set. I see a few others in there that would be nice to save.

I have one of those Motorolas in a slightly different cabinet, a 1954 model as I recall. Very flashy 50s style. Kinda hard to believe that a set like that would end up there, but then they don't really have much value. (I've tried selling mine and nobody has seemed interested)

We have one coming up next weekend locally but I can never bring myself to attend, for fear there will be something special I can't save. I have talked to the local coordinator and he has even sent people to me who had sets to scrap, but they were always something late model. Maybe someday that will pay off with something rare being dropped off on recycling day.
