Why were HUGE consoles like these ever popular? My Grandmother has one and it must weigh at least 250 pounds, if not more. They don't even look like stereos. Just some sort of anonymous looking wooden... thing.
Lastly, I am so tired of the term : " Mid Century". Its from the 60's. Until we start getting into the 2050's and 60's then its still just fine to say its from the 50's, 60's and so on. We know what that means.

If somebody wanted it they will probably get it for $26, obviously your gonna need a big truck to pick it up.

Bruce, that would look good sitting with one end in the bedroom, out the door ,down the hall, past the bathroom, through the dining room, then the kitchen, then out through the breezeway and then the back door so the other end is in the garage!!!

From the days of bigger and louder were best. To have a kilowatt of bass proved that you had exceptional musical taste and that you would have won the neighborhood contest.

Am I the only one who opened this thread expecting to see NCC1701 somewhere?

Longer, lower, wider consoles were the rage in the 60's & 70's because they heavily advertized
stereo separation - and wider means more separation.
The massive cabinetry gave the appearance of wealth, masculinity - "bigger is better".

How many of you have bought a big-assed truck not for it's actual utility, but because it "looks cool"?

It isnt that big 57 inches long is only 4ft 9 my RCA console is that long.

What repair Tech says is true they where big for stereo seperation, if you stick 2 stereo speakers side by side it defeats the object of stereo, also some of them with valve amps needed to big to hold everything, not like todays all in one systems with everything on one circuit board, reason why they sound rubbish.

The price on that console is stupid though $250 and no bids, wonder why ?

Nope. I was expecting some extra-high-class-cheezy replica transistor.

Your great grandchildren-collectors will be peeved that you tossed that out, just as if your grandfather said he crushed a tiresome old hard to use Grebe. Maybe.
