Recapped and resistors checked. With external ant hooked up this thing turns on blaring at minimum volume.
Took pot apart and cleaned. For first half of wiper travel ohm meter stays the same then gradually moves up the scale.
Tried a similar pot but still tht blaring beast and last half of volume gets louder. Any ideas? I ended up putting a two meg resistor between ant and radio and it quietened down some with more control from pot. Can someone help the new kid?
Thanks Jack

This set has the volume control in the audio section. The low side of the control connects to common negative. Looking at the rear of the control, there are three terminals: the left hand one should be solidly connected to the common negative bus. Turning the control down should short out audio to common ground.

Check your wiring around the control. You may have inadvertently miswired something so that audio goes around the control rather than being controlled by it. What I would do is print out that section of the schematic and go over the radio wire by wire marking off on the schematic with a highlighter.

Thanks guys. Pot is grounded. If wired wrong would upper half of pot range still make the volume go up?

Yes. The pot works increasing resistance from the input signal towards low volume as well as increasing the connection to ground, effectively reducing the volume. Opposite as you go towards high volume. The pot should reduce volume to zero or near zero at the low end. Try this: with a jumper short the center terminal of the pot to ground. Should cut the volume to nothing. If not, something's not right around that section or the pot is bad.

Question: does your radio have the terminal board shown in dotted lines with terminals P, C, S? That would appear to be an optional phono input. Those often required a jumper for the amplifier to pick up the radio, but don't think that's the case here.

hey Reece, jumper to ground did cut the volume completely out. I see no terminal board with P C S
terminals. Radio has a 6K6 in place of the 6F6 but didnt think that would make a difference

If the jumper to ground kills the volume, but turning the volume down does not then there are only two choices. Either the ground terminal of the volume pot is not connecting to ground. Or, internally the pot is not connecting to the terminal that eventually goes to ground (break inside of the pot).

You can confirm this with the radio unplugged by measuring the resistance betweeen the center terminal and ground while you turn the volume to minimum. It should go to a very low value (probably under a few hundred ohms). If it does not then it is a matter of determining if the bad connection is internal or external to the pot.

Yeah Curtis, no continuity 2nd tap to ground. Guess its time to go back into the pot.
Thanks guys Jack

Thanks Curtis for the lesson on the pot. Next time i go inside to clean one i will know a bit more of how to check one out.
Pot was bad but came up with a substitute. Radio is working good. Thanks to all replies, Jack
