I just got this portable over the weekend - you can see it here: http://www.antiqueradios.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1603675#p1603675It looks like it's complete except for two things - the chassis screws. Since the screw heads would be clearly visible on the sides, I want to make sure I'm using the right type of screw. Can anyone show me what the original screws look like?

Mine has sheet metal screws. They are a flat-top, Phillips head, countersunk type. I think "oval" head might be the closest you'll find today at the "usual" suspects (Lowe's, etc.). They won't stick out as far as a pan head will. My radio is the aluminum cased version, but I think they would have used the same type screws so the heads would be flush with the sides.

As Kent said. Oval head, but maybe not quite so rounded as modern ones. They are definitely domed, though, and not perfectly flat on top like a flathead. Mine is the alligator finished leatherette version. No reason your straw version should be different from our two variants.
Oh, and they seat into a dished washer. I did not notice in your photo if yours were still stuck on or missing.
Edit: I don't have a good picture, but maybe you can judge by this one what it should look like. They are not countersunk enough to be flush with the surface.

OK, i recognize that type of screw. I can get those at a local hardware store, along with the dished washers. I did some more Googling and found this pic at Radiomuseum: http://www.radiomuseum.org/forumdata/upload/6-G-601-D_Sailboat_%239_si_kitty46cat_COPneu.jpgIt's hard to tell in either pic if these are black or tarnished brass, but I'm leaning toward brass. I think I can get those screws in an "antique brass" finish, which would come pretty close.

I think mine were brass plated. They are very dark now, but they are definitely steel.

Mine are dark, almost black. That could be from age. I don't think that they're bronze. If the new ones are too bright, take a black Sharpie marker to them. Tht will work for a while, although it will wear off.
