The GE Superadio used to be one of the best to buy. They may be today as well. I have not kept track of today's versions. I see they have rebranded them under RCA's name, which I suppose is fine as RCA owns the GE name. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00120 ... B00000J061-Steve

The Super Radio III is but a shadow of the former glory of the original Super Radios. I have one these Grundig S350DL models, and I can readily recommend it. It performs much better than average on the AM band and has great audio. It runs forever on D cells. It has analog tuning with a frequency counter display, which is kind of wonky, but it's accurate and gets the job done. The bandwidth is adjustable, which is very useful for marginal signals. http://www.amazon.com/Grundig-S350-Delu ... 829&sr=8-1Regards - Dan

The Grundig 350 is good value, you can find a new one for under $60.- since they introduced the 450.

If you want to buy a new AM radio without shortwave but with good sound, sensitivity and selectivity, that $42 RCA (formerly GE Superadio III) is about as good as it gets for the price (in my opinion). Of course it has FM, too. You'll probably need that as many sports and talk shows are moving there since lots of FM stations can't survive playing mainstream music any more.

The Sangean PR-D5 has historically been one of the best portable radios for sensitivity and selectivity on AM that actually sounds great, and often beats out all competitors in that category. Often pulls in stations at full power where others simply play static. I can personally attest, but they are not cheap at ~ $100:

Dave I agree. The big speaker is a bonus too. Doug

Yeah, there are likely to be a good number of 'deaf' ones in the bunch, but there are some good ones too.

-Steve Note: RCA does not own GE. GE bought RCA years ago and no longer exists. A poster on Amazon stated that the radio was made by AVC. No wonder it is not of the same quality.

RCA ceased to exist in 1985 or 86. it's only a brand name now.

If you really want to save money, some of the Sony (and other brand) headset radios have great reception.
There are MW DX guys who swear by the Sony SRF-59 -- it's basically a radio on a chip in a silver plastic case that is a high performer on AM.
I just got an SRF-59 at the local Kroger chain for $17.
Although I haven't had much of a chance to try to DX with it, just tuning around it appears to be a good performer -- good sound, good sensitivity, and sharp selectivity.
Works on one AA battery. Gets FM also. Almost forgot, it has analog tuning.

AM radio is a secondary and usually ignored function on most new radios. Therefore anything decent for tabletop use is gonna be a multiband set like mentioned, and probably cost alot. I still think looking back to a time when AM was an important(or only) feature is the best way to get a good AM set. Do not be afraid of used gear. Compare prices.
