Another one, decent equipment but the cabinet is ghastly, i dont usually gut things but with this id have no problem pulling it apart.

I forget what it's called but it's the best one made that year. I think 62 or 63. RepairTech
has posted on them before. I believe he also custom made a console using the cabinet from one and the guts from one of these. IMHO it's an ugly hulk but it has the best electronics RCA made
at the time.

You are quite correct!
It's an RCA Victor 3VF619 - made from 1961-64.
Orig cost = about $600 smackers.

My parents console - I never liked that monster French Provincial cabinet.
Mom loved it.
Dad blasted it (usually when drunk)

The one I found like it - I was excited to TEAR IT DOWN and use the guts.

Looks like an RCA cabinet designer was reminiscing of the elegant RCA Berkshire Breakfront and came up with this while on a drinking binge.... Or perhaps smoking the wacky weed...

Gawd!

Indeed, the cabinet might be too much, but the performance is extrodinary.

It just needs some red grille cloth to set it off, maybe some white paint also, perhaps a few pink roses as well?

I have seen a lot of TVs and some radios where people gutted them to make stuff like book cases and quilt chests. But this is the first time I have ever seen someone take a china cabinet and gut the shelves to put a radio in it. Just odd enough for me to Love/hate it at the same time  .

That style console sat in my parents dining room for decades....
People that came over thought it was a china cabinet.

well ?

Agreed! Part of collecting these for me is being able to have a friend's jaw drop when I show them some of these quirky units. I'd love to hear how it sounds, too. I'd buy that one in a minute if the price was right...and worry about where to put it later!

Well, I went and bought it. Had to put the sofa in the garage but it sounds pretty dam good and doesn't really look that bad. My buddy is in the hospital with a hernia and the wife is talking to the lawyer as i type this. Boy! This is going to be an expensive radio.

Most definitely you'll be changing the caps - some are real hard to get to in the tuner chassis.
Also some plate feed resistors on both chassis are prone to going high - I'd actually check them all out.
And let's not forget the 'lytics... room under chassis for new ones.

Good luck.... LOL.
