For the third time in six months our neighborhood is having its streets cleaned. I drove my truck home and parked it at two PM. Later, around four, I took my dog out for a walk at 4PM. Every time we go for a walk I check the truck.

Tonight, on a whim, we went out for a walk after dinner. Between the time I walked past my truck at four and at six "No parking Friday between 7 AM and 5PM for Street Cleaning" notices were posted. There are cars parked everywhere whose owners will never see these notices.

Previously not only did the signs go up 48 hours in advance, but all of the residents got a Metro- call about it.

My neighbor said that last Tuesday cars on his street was either ticketed or towed, but the street was never swept.

I'm pretty sure there is a hidden agenda here, and I'm just as sure it is a scam to collect parking fines.

BTW- last year the streets were cleaned one time- in October.

I reckon you've nailed it, Terry.

They're banking on two things: having the Municipal Court Judge in their pocket and nobody wanting to spend a fortune on a lawyer to challenge a fine.

I would call and complain but some empty headed phone person would just insist that I must be wrong. Or I might spray paint on all of the signs "Parking victims unite!"

But in the end it is just Louisville being Louisville- which is why I have ALWAYS hated it, and still do.

I've heard of such 'scams' where residents would be randomly towed and billed just because the city wanted to cater to tourists during tourist season - a happy tourist spending $$ and money from the towing bill... win-win for the city.

Here we have the Pelican street sweepers go down the streets once every couple weeks, but they just go around parked cars on the streets.. The drivers of the Pelicans do a half-way job anyways.. so the streets end up looking worse after they pass then what it did to start with.. So its not a big deal here.. about the only time youre asking for a tow or fine is when you park more then 12" from the curb and it is seen and when it snows alot, and you park in an area where there are signs stating no parking when there is "x" amount of snow or when your vehicle is drifted in after so long of time after the snow is finished on the street.

Check your state's statutes, there are explicit regulations stating how many hours (days?) ahead before a temporary sign becomes effective.

Then again, maybe the guy tasked with putting the signs up screwed up and put them up late.

Don't look for conspiracy and malfeasance when simple stupidity will do.

Get your local media interested in this. They all love a good story about scams such as you are suffering from. The biggest news paper, the local TV news, etc.
If explained well, they will make the city look either stupid or corrupt.

Gee, do you think this has anything to do with the DERBY? Aw, they'd never try to clear the main corridors to the track on Oak's day would they?
(Hint-sure)

I've contacted my city councilman as well as the public works department. I did find out that there is a city ordinance, (read Law), that requires posting 24 hours in advance. I intend to print some flyers to attach to the signs asking people to call their councilman to protest.

(If it walks like a scam and talks like a scam then it is probably a scam)

Nope- a city ordnance, (Law), requires posting 24 hours in advance.

Gee- public scandal during Derby week by local media that are already in the city's pocket. Um, I don't think so.

PEACEFUL PUBLIC PROTEST

So I posted these signs and one of the local stations might send out a crew.

I really hate being on TV. I'm old and ugly and I wouldn't impose that on anyone at dinner time.

Here in my small town, if I were to call my town council member with a complaint like that, heads would roll. I'd probably get a visit before close of business today from the public works director, hat in hand, apologizing. But, that's here, not there. Still, I would think an elected official would listen. They are the easist one to fire for this!

Around here, they guy who put the protest signs would probably be arrested for putting up a sign without a permit

Sadly, our small town is more like the Scottb's than bgadow's. The council members and city employees appear to see themselves as part of the same club and superior to the rest of us.

Just be careful YOU don't get charged with defacing City property for putting those notices up

Look at the guy that took the video of the birds striking the airliner, he got gored by the FAA....

Wait 'till the Derby is over. They'll be looking for something to sell the newspapers after the derby too.

You should of made the word "notice" in all red letters, that way they could be seen from half a block away... but, did i see a speed limit of 35mph in a residential neighborhood??
