Bill, I didn't state it explicitly, but doing that test, you were actually at the point where you can connect with one machine and not the other? I mean, if you use, say Starbucks, and you weren't there to do this test, it doesn't mean much. Just asking.

OK, I was just making sure the test was valid. Have you run the Network Wizard? Sometimes setting up a new connection works to correct configuration errors.

Yeah, I removed all the network connections and started fresh. Tried without the firewall and without the anti virus also. Based on the link you provided I thought it was router related, and a lot of people have gone down the same path as I did. The Windows 7 worked fine until we came here, and logically I thought the computer was OK, but one never knows. As long as I have the Vista machine I have email and internet access, so it isn't a major problem. I'd prefer having the 7 one working though. I'll mention it to the Wi-Fi provider but usually they aren't technical and act as gate keepers for the computer people

Sounds like that would be your next move, even though they may not be much help. I didn't read all of the tech-help sites on that Google page, but at some point, there should be a resolution for you. Perhaps your reading will be fruitful, or the router admin can help in some way. I wish you success.

There's definitely a glitch in your configuration. I have my network consisting of two XP-32bit machines, one Vista-64bit and two Win7-64bit machines and all communicate with each other and the internet. I freely swap files and have had three machines streaming video from the 'net at the same time with no problems. It is nearly impossible to troubleshoot the problem without being on the machines in the network to see how each is configured. I had to bop back and forth for an hour or so to get them all liking each other but I eventually prevailed. If you have a friend that is computer savvy, you may want to call him/her in. The only other solution may be to have a computer tech visit or remotely connect with a service.

Quote: There's definitely a glitch in your configuration. I don't think so based on the link GrayLox posted. Seems a common problem with some wi-fi networks. I know a little about computers and since the Windows 7 does work on other Wi_Fi networks I want to clear the router before any more checking of the computer. Thanks though.

Hopefully the tech support for the network can get you straightened away. I manage a public wifi network that averages 600-700 customers a day, and though we do get occasional glitches, the technology behind these has gotten much better. The most often complaint we used to get was "It was working fine at Starbucks earlier...". Usually the machine was still caching the Starbucks address. Doing a release/renew clears that up. Newer versions of Windows seem to be better at detecting when the network has changed, and doing that in the background so the user doesn't even notice. You seem to have gone through the steps that would have cleared an issue like that.
The most common thing we see these days is the wifi adapter being disabled. On many laptops, Dell in particular, there's a slider switch on the right side of the machine that can be quickly used to disable wifi -- probably for airplanes, etc. Roughly removing the laptop from the case can sometimes toggle this switch. It's usually apparent in that the laptop has an indicator light above the keyboard area that says if the adapter is enabled or disabled, but many people miss that.
Let us know what you find out.
Peter

I'd much rather have a "hard" switch. Yes, I will pursue this next week and see what can be done. I will post the results here so that others might benefit from the outcome.
