Dunno if this has been mentioned before... but whenever you have to dismantle something with a strong spring in it... it might be worthwhile to first place it in something like a plastic tub or basin, and then put a rag or towel over it. The heavier the spring, the heavier the towel.
This assumes you can open the device by feel, because you won't be able to see what you're doing.
The basin contains small parts that might go flying, and the rag or towel will help keep the spring from flying very far, if at all. Of course, your hands might still be in some danger, depending on kind of spring it is.
You should still wear the safety glasses... FWIW Nelson
