Hi,

I'm junking out a Tek RM45 scope and wondered if anyone had the section of the schematic with the power TX. I'm wondering :?: if its worth pulling the TX for future uses before the carcass goes to the dump!

Thanks,

Corby

Corby,

Pull the transformer. There are several HV secondaries, and several filament windings to boot. Go to BAMA and download the Tek 545 manual its the same as the RM45.

Our RM529 manuals boldly stated, "Tektronix transformers are guaranteed for life". But when one failed and I called them for a replacement, Tektronix kindly explained exactly what that meant. "When the transformer fails, the instrument's life is over." The transformer was no longer available.

So good ones DO have value, beyond the weight of iron and copper.

I called the local Tektronix facility about the "Guaranteed for life" transformer for a model 512. He laughed, but, said he could get the specs for me to have one wound, if I wanted it. (I declined) :)

Tek wound some mean transformers and they did honor that lifetime warranty, although when the 500-series ended its life on the production line, so did the "life" of the transformers.

Six years ago, when I was discussing the artificial aortic heart valve I was going to be getting, the surgeon told me that it had a lifetime warranty.

Hey, wait a minute ...... !!

Lifetime warranties: Generally worth almost as much as the piece of paper they are printed on :P

However, I'm definitely a champion of the Craftsman unlimited lifetime warranty on their hand tools. They'll even replace abused tools, including ones that have obviously been modified for other uses.

Dean-
Not around here. If the local Sears has seen you have "modified" a tool, they tell you to take a hike. Rightfully so. Last time I witnessed this, the schlub who wanted a new screwdriver admitted to me afterward that he needed a drift pin, and he figured he could ruin his Craftsman screwdriver and they would just hand him a new one. He wanted to save himself the time and gas to go to the store and buy something. So he took a screwdriver in OK condition, and ran it on the grinder.

Sears has both feet on banana peels. I don't expect them to last out the decade. It certainly doesn't help them to supply tools for those who won't buy the correct one, and expect a handout.

I've not had a problem with tool replacement at Sears. Took them one of their screwdrivers that I found buried in an old barn dirt floor. All it was was a handle and a rusty nub about 1/2" long. They replaced it no questions asked. You should be able to push them on it as they do claim that their warranty is UNLIMITED. Abuse does put a limit on it, whether we agree that they really shouldn't cover it or not.
