I have a resistor that is burning up (smokes) when I turn on my radio. Here's the deal:

I have a Radio Craftsmen RC-8: http://www.nostalgiaair.org/Resources/044/M0016044.htm

I replaced the caps and the unit preformed beautifully. One day, the radio suddenly looses power, and i shut it off right away wondering what was up. The 1K 5W resistor right after the 5Y3GT tube got real hot. I replaced it. It smokes if I turn it on now.

Looking at the schematic, there is a 700Ohm 10W resistor behind that one. It wasn't under my chassis. I added that resistor, but no chance to the hot resistor problem...
I'm reading 278 volts off the rectifier tube, supposed to be 280. Any ideas?

Looks like you need to start doing some resistance testing. With the radio turned off and unplugged you can start looking at the right hand side of that 1K resistor to ground and if you see anything less than about 5K ohms that is a problem. Then start taking things loose from that line until the short or very low resistance goes away. Fortunately you don't seem to have a lot of options (C34C, C24 or something touching a wiring connection).

yea, this might turn into one of those winter projects for me. I usually have less time in the summer to do my hobby. I have another one on the shelf with the same task ahead of it pretty much. just too much fun for one man

Yafan,
The 278 volt reading is ok. I'm concerned about your "behind" statement. I think "before" the R41. Perhaps same and what you mean. But do resistance readings as recommended. I figure without the 700 R40 your luck just ran out. You need good resistors here. Follow the schematic. Don't use the old R41.

yes.. behind, before.... i use them interchangeably sometimes. I replaced both resistors when I was working on the unit. I will check my resistances, maybe something got messed up without it showing.
