A customer brought me a mint condition Sony CRF 160 multiband radio . He was using it on batterys . He took it to retard shack to see if they had a power cord for it .
This older radio has a 4 pin socket for the cord . Sony did this alot because they provided a 12 volt cord that fit the same hole .

You guessed it . The moron at rodeo shack grabbed any old power cord and then applied 125VAC directly on the 12VDC pins ..... POOF . They then sent the radio to another retard shack to get it fixed . They sent it back unfixed . They also charged this guy 84$ for the estimate and shipping .

I took the radio apart today to find stuff fried on both the amp and the tuner board . Resistors blasted in half , transistors shorted and possible amplifier output transformer .
I dont think this is fixable . First off this would take alot of time and i have to charge people . The amplifier board is easy to get to but the only bad thing here is that possible transformer . 3 leads . From center tap in now reads 7K to one side and 95 ohms to the other .
The tuner board is stuck in there to be bomb proof . It has a row of pushbuttons all over it and 50 wires all under stuff . 125vac went all the way through the 12vdc B+ chain

It makes me sick to see this mint radio now garbage :x
Anyone have a real beat up 160 ?

That really sucks. I'll keep an eye out the next time I meander through the local flea malls.

Hmm, they blew up his radio, then charged him for telling him they couldn't fix it? Nice. I am surprised that they had a 4-pin connector cord, or that they still claim to repair radios.

it has been about 15 years since I got any useful electronic advise from someone working in a radio shack. I had to actuallly explain fuse holders to a worker there a few months back

I don't think there are a lot of college graduates working at RS. All I see are McDonalds rejects.

Might be able to get some compensation from the local or regional manager. Of course the kid would be "let go." Probably gets a better job in the medical field

And the owner actually paid the $84 demanded by RS for destroying his radio?

Now THIS is lawsuit material!!! :D :D :D :D :D

Simply pick-pocketing $84 off of the guy would have been less insulting than this whole shenanigan.

The smartest person at my rat shack is a 21 year old blonde girl(at least she knew what solder was). I actually saw one of the "men" their inhaling can air at the register, of course I live in a college town so this type of employee is common.

Did I mention how they bombarded me about upgrading my 6 year old phone? I literally walked out during his lecture.

Have the radio owner contact Tandy Corp HQ in Ft. Worth TX and ask for the CEO's office, and ask for the CEO. Typically you will get one of their assistants who are great to work with.
They will, at least in my own experience, go the extra mile to take care of you, unlike the RS retail stores.

Agree with this suggestion. The owner can't just meekly cop this unjust crap from RS. At the very least they owe him the $84 back.

They not only owe him the 84 bux back, but either an actual repair on the receiver so it works correctly, or an equal replacement.

That would be the only way to "make him whole" again, and should be what he requests when contacting the honcho at Tandy Corp.

And the character who fried it being let go? Absolutely, and maybe next time he will be more careful with a customer's item brought in for an accessory.

Ken, tell your customer he's got to be bold with them. He's been harmed, and deserves restitution.

That speaks volumes and I can't say I'm surprised. Exactly why I never deal with RS anymore.

That canned air is usually R134A which is harmful.

Seriously though the people at Radio Shack need to give him his $84.00 back and a radio just like he had or an equal equivalent in function and performance.

Had it been me I would have refused to pay the $84.00 and told them they would be hearing from my lawyer if they didn't replace my radio.

Normally when I walk into a Radio Shack I already know what I need and where to find it. What Radio shack needs in each store is one person to run the registers and handle most of the stuff then have one person who went to electronics school specifically for the parts and kits they have.

So where do you think an "electronics school graduate" and RS management will meet on a salary? That might be the reason they don't have a staff of EE's or something, working there anymore. Nobody goes to school for electronics anymore, anyway, except for mil. training. They all go to school to learn computers, and of course, probably have a surface understanding of how to connect up the "hardware". They don't give a *** what all those little bitty components inside are, and they are too tiny to see anyway. You don't fix those anymore!
