I was wondering if white vinegar has any uses for a radio restorer? I was thinking along the lines of maybe using it as a degreaser, or used on sticky pushbutton assemblies?

I am more inclined to use tetrachloroethylene based cleaners for those applications - Just keep it off anything plastic. But nothing beats white vinegar for something an alkaline battery has leaked on. It is a good cleaner wherever a slightly acid cleaner is indicated. I do always neutralize with a baking soda solution afterwards.

I don't use it in electronics work, but I do have several decorator lamps that use tap water and small pumps. They need periodic maintenance, and white vinegar works well in removing the mineral deposits left behind by the tap water.

What's the problem with red wine vinegar? Or balsamic? 1/2 :)

Homemade Furniture Cleaner and Polish

Mix equal parts linseed oil, white vinegar and turpentine in a glass or metal container.

Stir well to blend the ingredients with a wood stirrer.

Dip a soft cloth lightly into the polish. Rub the polish onto the furniture. Allow the polish to remain on the surface for two to three minutes.

Rub the excess polish off the furniture with a new soft, lint-free cloth.

Chuck, I asked in a jokey voice, but I really do seriously hope for an answer. Does it have to be white? If so, what's wrong with the other kinds? That seems perfectly on-topic for a "White Vinegar" thread.

Dave Wise

As a matter of fact, I have used balsamic vinegar to neutralize alkaline battery leakage, in my GR 1650-A Impedance Bridge. It worked very well. It was just what I had on hand at the time, and I haven't detected any ill effects due to its not being white.

Dave,

White vinegar is "pure," without coloring or malted grains that add color to it. Some vinegars have other things.
Read label to be sure.

Wasn't jumping on you, just "nudging" the thread a little. :)

I see. Since I rinsed the area thoroughly in water afterward, I don't expect any problems from those tasty adulterants.
But if I'd had white on hand, I'd've used it.

Yep - apply C2H4O2 to the workpiece, then C2H5OH to the technician. :)

Dave Wise

How did you get the suffixes to display right?

With font size and bold.

My favorite mix of atoms: C2H5OH

with dissolved phenols and wood resins......taken medicinally, of course.

And now I have drifted off topic! Returning to the Vinegar topic now.....

There was a thrad somewhere where someone immersed a nasty variable capacitor in White Vinegar and let it sit overnight. Rinse , dry, relube. Beautiful. I'n going to try this next time I get a grimy one.

Just don't use Coca Cola instead; it may dissolve it.
