Boy I am just done trying to sell stuff on Craigslist. I listed a Rockband system for PS3 that I picked up at a thrift store. I listed it at 140$. A lady offered me 75$ so I said yes. I listed it as in good shape but untested and I wasn't sure if it was all there. She asked me about it on the phone and I told her the same thing. She then came to get it, she looked at it and said the game was missing and if I would take 55$ I said sure. She then called me and told me the dongles were missing. I said I have no idea what those are and that you looked over it, and I told her I don't have them. Everything that was in the box when I got it was still in there. I then get home and she says it doesn't work. If its missing so much, how can you test it? I told her again it was sold as-is. She is insisting on returning it. So now tomorrows she is bringing it back and returning it. I just think its wrong, she came over here, looked it over. On top of me stating that I wasn't sure if it was all there. It just crazy. I have a guy coming over tomorrow to pick up a speaker that he won on ebay. I listed it as needing the surround fixed...I wonder what that will turn into..........I think I will just tell the lady to pitch the system and I will leave the cash in the mailbox....

Once you walk out the door with it you own it, as far as I'm concerned. No refunds.

It's not CL although many flaky people hang out there. It's the person. After the first price reduction I would have said take it or leave it.

I've had mostly good experiences with CL but I'm careful with buyers and I'm not afraid to not say "yes" to everything. The one time I thought I was screwed was when I sold a motorcycle, Part of the payment was in a check, and he had me deliver the bike to a street in St. Paul. The guy was also slightly under the influence of something when we met to do the deal. He said to just leave the bike there. As I was driving home, I thought "what an idiot I am". But, the check cleared immediately and the title changed over.

She just sent me another saying that she was buying this for her dads last birthday which he is 78. BUTT when she was here buying it, she said she was buying it for her mother who was a Beatles collector. There are just to many question marks, I am going to tell her I can't and see what happens....

I'd stand my ground and tell that she examined the item before purchase and agreed to buy it anyway; so, it now belongs to her (no refunds). If she keeps on, remind her that she's buying second-hand merchandise and that if she wants the option to return something; then, she should go to wal-mart.

CL has it's share of flakes; but, the same breed of flakes turn up when using traditional means of advertising. For 20+ years, I've been picking up broken TV's for the purpose of fixing them to resell. Most of the ones I sell don't come back; but, there are those that will bring one back a month after the sale, claiming that it does not work and demanding their money back. I guess that part about "no warranty - sold as-is" doesn't mean anything.

A few weeks ago, my flea market friend sold one of those mid '80's 9" RCA XL100 AC/DC color TV's for $15. Within two hours, she was back with the TV. She claimed it was for the kids and her husband wouldn't let her keep it because it wasn't a remote controlled TV and since the TV didn't have a remote, the kids would be too lazy to turn it off and they'd just leave it on all the time. Had they been my kids, there would have been some ground rules laid down regarding the TV and they would have been out a TV the first time I caught it on when they were out of the room for an extended period of time. Anyway, being the nice guy that he is, he gave her a refund.

About a week later, he sold the TV again and it came back a second time for some stupid reason. When he told me about this, I thought "what the **** do these people expect for $15?" I was so upset by it that I told him to bring the TV over the next time he came and I'd buy it.

The ones who really irritate me are the ones who call, ask a million questions over the phone, and then make a lowball offer without even seeing the item. Nine times out of ten, they don't even bother to show up. I finally got to the point where I would not negotiate price over the phone. If they want to negotiate, they can come look at what I'm selling.

And, I could go on and on; but, you get the idea. It's not just on CL. It happens everywhere. Now, I send most of my TV's to my flea market friend. That way, he can sell them and I don't have to deal with all the BS.

I'd also tell her tough crap, no refund. She looked at it, and you told her it was "as is untested". Especially since she got it from you for less than half the price you were asking. I've bought plenty of stuff from flea markets etc. over the years and never even though about going back to bitch if something didn't work.

Well she sent me another email calling me the bad guy.

"wow... you are being a bad guy. I honestly believe you knew it was
incomplete. I think you were dishonest and if you would have said up
front that it was missing pieces I probably still would have purchased
it, but not for my last $55. I think you just wanted to re-coop what
you spent for it.. and it was for both. my mom is a Beatles fan and I
was hoping to interest her in playing because my dad wanted to see
all of us play together. but hey I learned a lesson. don't trust the
nice guys. thanks for the lesson. Have a great weekend. goodbye. good
luck and God bless."

I didn't have any idea that it wasn't complete. PS3 carp isn't my forta, I just found at a thrift store and bought it. The price was to good to pass up. I figured the buyer would know if it was complete or not, I even posted photos. The pieces that its missing are like 40$ tops on ebay. I ebay searched in order to figure out what a dongle looked like. Well I now know not to pick up game systems anymore...Life goes on...

Of course now I have the buyer who bought the WE speaker from me, wanting me to pay the custom fees in china...Anyone have some yuan I can send him

It worked,
She is returning one to you
Which hasn't worked for years,
And she gets her money back.

Her nonsensical passive-aggressive whining would be enough for me to tell her to shove it. First you're the "bad guy", but she shouldn't trust the "good guys". "thanks for the lesson. Have a great weekend. goodbye. good luck and God bless."

Talk about blame shifting. She should have checked everything first. A few months ago I sold a very nice Yamaha preamp/amp combo on CL. I had owned it a few months and decided to flip it. It worked perfectly. This guy from out of town makes an offer that I accept (1st mistake) and wants to meet me 1/2 way to do the deal (2nd mistake). I meet him in a parking lot 1/2 way between his house and mine. He pays, takes it home, emails later, and says it sounds beautiful. Next day he emails and complains that one channel quit and wants his money back. I suggest some things he should try like double checking connections, he mentions he had the cover off the preamp looking at something. I never considered taking it back. He emailed a few more time whining about being screwed, losing a lot of money, etc. I ignored the emails.

Makes me feel better! I had a little guiltiness on me, thinking maybe I should have tested in and checked the stuff in the box against what was said on the box. But then on the other shoulder, I sold it for less then half of its worth because I was assuming the buyer would know something about what is suppose to be there. She knew the game was missing. I thought the game was extra option. So she should know something more about what is suppose to be with it.

Exactly!

You don't know that she won't either swap it for an inferior one to return, burn it out, or keep something out of it.

When someone wants their $ back, they'll give you any sob story they can think of, to get their way.

My exact response to that would have been:

Anyone who would spend their "last $55" on a videogame.....good grief. No worries about eating or anything, gotta have that PS3. She lays it on thick.

That is why I will meet them at a public place or parking lot, never my house. This way that person won't hound you at your front door step. Never let them come to the house, its can open up a can of WORMS!!!

I've never had any trouble selling on CL. I just ignore the "low-ballers" and usual pile of emails from people wanting something for free, with terrible grammar, or who obviously did not read the listing.... With these filters to weed out the idiots, I've never had a problem yet. Oh, and we meet at a McDonald's or a gas station right down the road, never at my house.

For future sales of video gaming sets like Rock Band, do a little bit of research before you sell to help defend yourself against people like this. Even if you can't test it, you should be able to verify that all components are present with a minimal amount of research online. I don't like to negotiate, so I usually put "price is firm" and "sold AS-IS" in the listing as well. If they don't like that, then I don't deal with them. Simple enough.

Even with my tough set of personal rules in place, I still manage to sell everything that I have ever listed on CL, except for one radio with I ended up selling to a member on here 8)

I'm just about done with CL too. I used to sell a lot of things on there but it seems that about 75% of the time the people you're selling too are very flakey. I've repeatedly had people that said they would come by at a certain time and thus I would make plans for them, only for them never to show up, thus wasting half of my day.

I was to the point at one time i was issuing receipts that stated anything you bought was likely used, and was sold as-is no refunds/trade backs.. only bc one idiot i sold a CB radio to blew the final in the thing.. then i give him a different radio to try and he had to blow that final also... I know the 1st radio worked bc i tested it right before he came, and the other radio was the one i used to use all the time.. The 2nd radio even had a power mic that was worth more then the radio.. but he got his 20.00 back.. and after that i was never refunding any money again.. From now on, issue receipts for you CL sales, then you will never have to deal with people trying to screw you over..
