This set was sold both with a single play phonograph and with a Capehart 10-12 drop changer. The changer is worth more than the rest of the set, if you find the right buyer. Needless to say, the condition and style of the '45 or UX-245 output tubes would have a great deal to do with the value of this set.

At a recent Stanton's auction, one which was well attended by rather deep pocketed collectors of both radios and phonographs, a really nice General Motors combination with changer and globe C-345 output tubes sold for a $200.00 to a fellow who stripped the 45's and a C-280 out and promptly sold the complete set, less those three tubes to anopther fellow for somewhere around a hundred dollars.

I have sold the changer for as much as $480.00, but these days I'd say $200.00 would be a closer estimate if tis value.

I wouldn't reccomend that you offer any more than $225.00 for the unit, unless it has KNOWN GOOT globe 45's. I'd be very pleased indeed to get one of these machines for $150 or less.

Yes, that Capehart changer is a rather nice one. Though, I didn't know it has become desirable.

I suppose I'm one of the desirees

I also have a General Motors radio with that changer. Probably one of the last radios made by GM in Dayton.

Looks like Vitanola likes to tear up nice radios and combinations. i might suggest that once the chassis and tubes, are sold off, piece by piece, he might be able to grind up the cabinet into toothpicks. Those GM sets are handsome radios, and are somewhat uncommon in that the cabinets were true period furniture. The radio chassis had superb audio.

Unfortunate that so many scavengers are attacking our preserved artifacts. With the creeps that are tearing up the victor RE-45 sets, they ware rapidly becoming an endangered species.

There are lots of buyers in the orient that are discovering, to their dismay, that the amplifiers in the Victor R-32 family of sets, were NOT made by Western Electric.

But, it's all about money.

No.

It's not all about the money.

It's all about necessity.

What would you suggest that I have done after this:

Image

Should I have restored this

or this?

Image

or these?

Image

Or would it perhaps have been better to bulldoze the lot?

I attempted to salvage some value from these machines. I lost a GM 170a (I think that was the model number) and a Philco 211 both of which used the Capehart 10-12. Both changers were salvageable, and so made it to the 'Bay. The 1930 Stromberg Carlson combination with the odd early changer was not so lucky, all that was left was scrap iron. The same was true of my Hexaphone, Amberola I, WECo Non-synchronous turntable set, 12A horn, and Western Electric Selectraphone.

As far as parts values, well, they do affect what a machine is worth in the market, do they not? A $25.00 radio which has a couple of UX-245's in it is not longer a $25.00 radio, is it? A console of modest value, and minor interest which is fitted with a relatively valuable changer is much more interesting, is it not? I was merely trying to offer an account of my experience with some of these sets, which doubtless is different from yours.

No, I wasn't the one who ended up with the GM 160A sans '45's, more's the pity!

Yes. But it is behind me now. I only brought it up because for some reason I felt the need to explain to Mr. Houston
that I did not generally buy these sets to tear down for parts.

I would aver that I like these combinations as well as he does. I just own fewer of them, now.

I have a 160 that I'd really like to replace, as it has been refinished, and rather badly at that. A good complete machine should cost
less that my effort to refinish. I am looking for a single-play machine, however, as I really play my records, and don't care to use the semi-permanent styli, which a changer requires. I had the opportunity to pick up an Electrola 9-54, and have passed it up, for if I was to use that space I'd much prefer a RE-154, same cabinet, but with the later (less valuable, but better) Micro-Synchronous radio chassis, and a single-play phonograph.

If the cabinet is in nice condition, anything under $150.00 would be a great bargain.

Nice looking radio,Rich.I can see why you want it.I agree about GM radios having attractive cabinets. The last thing I bid on on Flea-Bay before I gave them the kiss-off was a beautiful GM console in a semi-circular cabinet.I hate driving, especially more than an hour, but I was ready to drive almost three hours had I won the auction.
