Installed a Samsung 128GB SSD as my primary boot drive.
New Egg had it on sale for $89.99.
I had read about tremendous speed increases that an SSD
will provide. I can say, I am impressed with mine.

I run Linux and I cloned my existing Linux OS and data onto the SSD.
I took time to reorganize my data as it was larger than the SSD capacity.
Kept the old drive for data that I infrequently access.

The SSD's are much faster for sure. There is also another type of drive, a "hybrid" that combines both the solid state and standard hard drive in one package. Somehow it keeps track of what is accessed most and uses the solid state memory for that, and uses the standard drive for everything else.

The SSDs have every advantage over disk HDs.

No mechanical parts - NO mechanical failures

Minimal power usage, thanks in part to the above

More rewrites - how many? It is projected that SSDs are good for a few times as many rewrites

I have been running Linux on SSDs at work for about 1.5 years now. I think they are Intel drives. They are mostly DNS servers that do a few other things. The speed is fantastic.

My Toshiba 1 year (Toshiba warranty expired) and 2 week old laptop required a new hard drive.
Since Costco was paying the repair bill the same mechanical drive is being installed.

How do the SSDs hold up ?

2 years on an Intel 120GB drive, and it's been perfect.

Was my post not clear enough? :)

Other than a factory-defective one, you should have no problems for a LONG time.

It's like RAM; just plug in and forget.

Are they like flash drives?
If they work the same as a flash drive ( I know they DO NOT run off a USB port) what
if they go into a "write protect" mode like my Sandisk Curzer drive did.
I would not trust them, like SDHC cards, etc. they CAN go bad, YES I know a standard hard drive can go bad too but I have several that has Win 95 stuff on them that are still good to this day.
Can we say that about SSD drives years from now....time will tell, jus my 5 cents worth here... :)

A SSD drive attached to the PC's disk drive port is definitely not the same as a USB thumb drive; there's no write-protect mode on system SSD drives; it's just not possible for it go into such a mode.

SSD drives do actually require more power than you might think. You will note that good, old-fashioned mechanical drives do have higher capacities, and power is one of the reasons. And they are still more $$$/GB to manufacture, although the difference is getting smaller and smaller.

SSD drives can be damaged. They're not as sensitive as mechanical drives to physical shock, but they can be fried electrically (as can mechanical drives). But most IT guys that deal with these issues on a daily basis will tell you that SSD drives are more reliable. Mechanical hard drives have an expected life span of 4-5 years.

Backups are still just as important. Lots of things can happen that can cause your data to be inaccessible.

Generally, if you're shopping for a new PC, get the SSD drive, and get a 1-2 TB backup drive for extra capacity and backup purposes.

Don't know. Seems maybe there should be some that do ??? Thinking back up. Someone will hopefully give an answer.

I have SD cards that are almost 10 years old. No problems from them, DESPITE all the abuse they've had. Stepping on, throwing around, even washed a couple of times.

My current laptop (the one that I've made over 3k post here with  ) runs perfectly. It has a 512GB dual-channel (split) SSD. It has been GOLD and it still boots and runs like new. It's a couple years old and I haven't been the kindest to it....

No offense, but you've had a unproportionate amount of bad luck with electronics so I think PICNIC may be to blame here.

The SSD drive I installed is SATA-3 - connects just like an ordinary Hard Drive.
Even the power connector is like that on an ordinary SATA Hard Drive.

I've partitioned my SSD to make it easy to install the next version of Ubuntu Linux
by having separate partitions for the current OS and another for the next release
of the OS. In addition, I have an external ESATA 1TB drive that I backup and clone
partitions too.

Most Windows users simply utilize the entire drive as a C: drive because Windows
OS's do not segregate well the OS from the user data.

Regarding reliability, there were some SSD's sold that were highly unreliable.
Intel had a reputation for being the only ones that were reliable - but I think
todays SSD's are generally very reliable.

Put a SSD on a Bridgeport mill of mine. The great thing was that it comes with data migration software that makes an image copy of the existing hard drive onto the new SSD. Really easy to upgrade. I just put the old disk drive way as a backup.

Man, cannot beat $90 for a 128GB SSD. That's crazy cheap compared to most I've seen.

Nick, no offence but sometimes you do not make sence, I do know what a PICNIC is, what the heck does it have with this topic....

SBKAF was the term back in the dark ages of main frame computers. (Short Between Keyboard And Floor) :)
