It's the chassis from a late fifties, or more likely sixties table radio. It is AC-DC. Looks to be missing a tube, probably either a 12sa7, 12sk7, or 12sq7, whichever one it doesn't have, and the output transformer, which was probably mounted on the speaker that it doesn't have also.

It's trash, it's dangerous and I would keep the tubes and throw the rest away, NOW!

If the board isn't cracked, it's probably OK but it's missing parts to make it work so firing it up isn't going to do any good anyway. It's not going to run without the output transformer, speaker, and the missing tube, even if it is OK. AC-DC sets will give you a wicked shock if you don't know what you are doing. I do agree that it's junk unless you have a case that it fits in with the correct output transformer and speaker.

Wait on trashing it! If it's missing a tube as mentioned it's a rare one.

Those tubes would be the 12BE6, 12BA6, 35W4, 12AV6, and 50C5...with odd variations of course. 12SA7 series are from older radios.

It's rare because it's missing a tube?

Bad sentence composition on my part.

"Looks to be missing a tube, probably either a 12sa7, 12sk7, or 12sq7...."
If the chassis had one of the tubes as mentioned by ggregg it would be rare. I should have used one of the Smilies?

Based on location the missing tube will be a 12BE6.

PCB chassis probably with 12BE6 standard tube line-up as mentioned. sometimes using 50B5. good learning project. output transformer probably attached to speaker frame. you could make it work. its a radio

Yeah, the fingers were typing before the brain was thinking. For twenty years, I've always got those mixed up. I know the difference, I just always say the wrong ones.....

I see that one of the tubes is a National (Japan). The capacitors and resistors look Japanese made, too.

Mighty be one of those small japanese sets, the ones that come in a lot of colors, and differing names.

Thank y'all very much for the info on the old radio
I am just starting out in the hobby but if I can get the thing playing I will build it a clear plexiglass box
that should look pretty cool with the tubes lighted up .
thanks again for the info

Anything can befixed, just a matter of time and money. Some projects turn into crusades.

All the electrolyti and paper capacitors need to be replaced, maybe some resistors as well. Then you would have to obtain a small PM speaker and output trnsformer as well as knobs for volume. These things get hot, so a plexiglass case might not work out. Also there is no dial position indicator, so something would have to be done to show approximately what station you are tuned to.

In any case, These little chassis are very dangerous and must never be touched while plugged in (even with switch in off position. Use of an isolation transformer is highly recommended, although this still does not guard against shocks when powered up.

Getting everything mounted without exposing any metal fasteners, etc. to Outside the cabinet would be a challenge.

Actually you should be able to find another radio of same vintage with a cabinet at a yard sale or thrift store for a couple of dollars. The pretty much used the same tubes from mid 50's through late 60's when tube radios all but ceased to be made.

I could see mounting it in a clear custom-made plexiglass case. I've considered trying that with a couple of older chassies, too. Just remember to include enough ventilation (slots and holes) to allow enough air to circulate to keep things cool. Such a case should be able to provide the needed isolation to keep things safe, too, and would be interesting once that's all done.

Interesting, to me at least, that someone used 'dogbone' resistors into the PCB era.

Also, agreed, these, especially AA5 PCBs, require full attention to safety while they're being worked on.

Good luck!

Mike

Those are more or less typical resistors that were used in Japanese electronics of the late 50's, into the sixties. The Akai M-7 reel to reel recorder had them in it, although not on a PCB. I think my Sony reel to reel (model 105A) might have them on PCB's, though I can't swear to it.

I tend to keep things like this in case I find a nice radio that needs a part say something like IF transformer , may even use tunner on a loop antenna , some people like these type of loop stick antenna like this one has

+1 to what Daniel just said. I keep a box of junkers like that for parts.

It's all been said... not worth refurbishing, but keep for parts.
Cheers,

I've got a 1963 Monarch japanese miniature am radio currently bouncing back and forth on my bench. It uses the 50C5 and 35W4 tube lineup also. The odd thing about it is that it's first IF coil is just a single winding. Looking at your photo I see two single winding-un-shielded coils.... One must be the oscillator... Is the other an IF coil? If so, I'm guessing Japanese brand. Probably late 50's or early 60's.
