Its that time of year and time for one of the biggest radio events of the West, Radio Day by the Bay 2017. As usual we will have several events happening starting bright and early and THIS year will be the biggest I've seen since being a member.

1: Electronics flea market:
We have a MASSIVE amount of stuff this year. A shipping container full plus probably most of the back yard of the museum will be full of everything imaginable:radios, turntables, speakers, test gear, tubes, parts, stereos, TVs, and some really obscure stuff. Bring a truck!

2: Our annual auction. As mentioned before I feel the quality of material this year is pretty good. We now have a catalog. It is not complete yet but keep your eyes on it as it will change as more sets are added. Many either already work or have been recapped as well as some that are in need of work, thus something for everyone

Catalog:

3: Live big band and our radio play. This year's feature is: “Candy Matson P. I. YUkon 2-8209 – The Cable Car Murder”

There will be food available too.

Anyway its always a lot of fun so make sure and mark your calendars! I will try to update this post as the catalog becomes more complete.

Rima and I will be there and are looking forward to meeting the people who attend, the woman detective show, and so forth. If any of you-all want to join us, we will be eating at mama Papas Lithuanian restaurant on Friday evening: http://www.mamapapalithuania.com/menu/

I would suggest going through moma and poppas earlier. As in 5:00 because they are popular
Now.

An update: more stuff came in for the flea market and auction.
4 twelve tube zenith consoles, all restored with nearly
Pristine original finishes. One week to go. We have more
Stuff than I've ever seen this year

Yeah, I have no idea how almost 200 items are going to get auctioned off in the 240 scheduled minutes. From past auctions, the best strategy for buyers seems to be to wait till near the end when most bidders have already left, the remaining ones have spent all their money, and the auctioneer is eager to just move on.

For that reason, from the CHRS standpoint, it might be better to sprinkle in the really high end stuff like those Zenith consoles throughout the auction, but I know that the way it works, stuff becomes available and is listed in that order, so you can't really do that.

That was considered for sure because as you said- if all the "good stuff" had gotten stuck in the front then it wouldn't be as interesting. So its more or less mixed up. I just back from being over there yesterday and the entire back yard, side of the building and downstairs is FULL. I've been a member for 7 years and I've never seen the sheer volume of material.

Can't wait! But please have a few more hand trucks available
since parking is so limited. Dragging a heavy boat anchor 2+
blocks to your car gets old fast.

Will do. Also- if you need help we will have 4-5 people out back to help with folks who need to haul stuff to their cars. They will have yellow shirts on. If you see someone have them help you. I might pull one of our wheelbarrows out too.

There is a LOT of good stuff up for auction this year, especially compared to the last couple of years. Lots of nice Philcos, and for Zenith lovers there are:

7S28
9S30
12A58
12U158
12U159
4V31
8S129

and a bunch of others. Also some nice Emersons and AK's. They're also taking proxy bids if you can't make it in person. (I'd almost be tempted to do that if I were interested in some of the later radios. CHRS auctions are notorious for going very, very slowly and falling very, very behind schedule.)

This looks to be the best CHRS auction catalogue in a long time, if not ever.

Bob

Yeah... we're aware of the auction "speed". Basically because none of the people doing the auctioning are actual auctioneers. Thanks for mentioning this as I will pass that along.

Yeah, I've often thought how much faster it would go with an experienced auctioneer. Sometimes there is a lot of patter and asides, or too small bid increments, or too long pitching or describing an item. If takes an extra minute per item, that's a total of three more hours. It can also be a problem with non-auction stuff running late. Busy schedule...

Mike Adams is the fastest CHRS auctioneer that I've seen, but his voice can give out over time. (Maybe that's why he's fast?) But one of the scheduled auctioneers this year has taken lessons in it, I believe. I predict this one will run long all the same.

Mike has always been the "finisher" for the auction because he just gets up there and gets things done. If there are no bids he says " ok, next one!" This year there are more sets so things will need to be sped up more...

This year's auction is going to be very interesting. I was there last weekend as a volunteer and observed Mike Adams giving the radios a final check-out. Lots of items and very high quality, so more bids per item are likely. Getting through all the items in a timely manner is going to be a challenge. Any item that does not generate interest will likely have its auctioning terminated in a matter of seconds so if you want sommething, speak up.

If you are bidding in person, PLEASE be seated as close as possible to the front of the hall, and bid enthusiastically with your number held high. One of the biggest sources of delays and confusion is when the auctioneer and staff can't see the numbers on everyone's paddles.

Rima and I must have missed you. We helped move some consoles and other items. There are certainly many nice radios for the auction, and the flea market is huge.

Photos of Saturday's flea market (Tomorrow 8AM) appear below. The quantity and variety of stuff is truly staggering-truly something for everyone here. Please Support CHRS by taking some of these items home with you. Note that this is JUST the flea market-There is also an auction with truly awesome stuff as well as a number of presentations I'm sure you'll enjoy.

We had a good time, enjoyed meeting everyone, appreciated seeing the radio play, got some parts, and won a Remler on the Auction.
