Around 25 years ago my youngest daughter (then about 27) hadn't been talking to me for a spell over some reason because she didn't agree with my fatherly type views about something. ( what's new.. right?)
Anyway... one day while driving along she heard that song "In the Living Years" and it struck her that maybe her Daddy's not always going to be around.
So she called me crying and apologized for being stubborn... and she bought the CD and sent it to me.
She has kept our channels of communication open since then.
That CD she sent and the words to the song as well as her tearful-call apologizing to me, meant the world to me!

although that song does not apply to me between anyone living or deceased in my life (thank god), it is very powerful and i just could not imagine if i had such regrets.

i have "gone rounds" with family members a tad bit more than just a few times. i stand for what i believe and what i believe to be right, but things never got to the level of which this song tells.

i get somewhat bothered nearly everytime i hear it and feel bad for people for whom it applies.

A number of songs have changed meaning for me, since I lost my little one.
To name a few;

"Since I don't have you", The Skyliners/1959.

"Without You", Johnny Tillotson/1961.

"Four Walls", Jim Reeves/1957.

I grew up in the sixties/seventies. Mum is from the Midlands in England. The Beatles filled the house. That was my first exposure to music, and it's still a huge influence on me to this day. As I got into my teens, It was the popular rock music (and some obscure stuff as well). Led Zep, Rush, Steely Dan, etc.

I picked up the guitar at age 11. Started playing along with songs I knew, one chord at a time. That was some 15 or so guitars ago, and over a dozen amplifiers, and I still own all of this stuff. Countless cover bands or as a hired gun, and a 10-year long gig with my own wife as a coffeehouse duo. We covered everything from Johnny Cash to Tom Petty to Simon & Garfunkel. Our setlist was over 70 songs.

Lately, I've gone in different directions, Valentina Lisitsa is wonderful. This morning, it was ol' Blue Eyes. Your tastes change as you get older, though I still love the stuff I heard as a kid.

For the vocals, the great Brook Benton. Just a great song, great voice and lyrics.
"It's Just a Matter of Time" is also great. He died young and never got much recognition.

Sure he did. Hunter Hancock on KGFJ 1230 KC/Los Angeles used to promote him all the time, but it was a minority station and audience.
I personally think "Rainy Night In Georgia" was his best, and one of the best songs of the past century.

Sister Hazel - Everything Else Disappears

Sister Hazel has always been one of my favorites, this song reminds me of my whole "angels started singing there she is my forever staring me in the face" moment. Here my wife and I are 22 years, 4 kids and a grandson later and still just in love just like the old days.
