Really nice work, and a set which isn't often seen today.
Interesting that your original photos show many components under the chassis which are about two decades newer than the set itself, an indication that some previous owner kept it working for at least that long. Those Sprague capacitors with red writing, the ElMenco mica caps, and the Cornell-Dubilier electrolytics are types that were commonly seen in the 60's and did not exist until many years after the kit was sold.

Shouldn't the feed to the rectifier plate connect to the other side of the filament resistor?

Beautiful work! What is that 2 piece white block next to the variable cap, and the white component marked N,L ?

Hi Tim,
You are correct. I reverse engineered the schematic before I discovered what the set was. It was connected as shown above. In that configuration, I have about 106V of B+. I will move it and see what that yields.

Hi oldradiogeorge,
That is the Line Input Filter shown in the schematic. L & N are Line and Neutral. I removed it from an IEN power input module. It has "X" and "Y" safety capacitors and inductors as shown.

The two piece white blocks are two 470 Ohm 5W resistors in parallel. Sorry I missed this in my previous response.

The schematic and wiring diagram together with instructions and parts list is in Allied's Radio Builder's Handbook, 8th ed. 1941. At page 26. This may be on the web somewhere? My scanner croaked for Christmas or I would put these pages here.
There is no line filter in the original, but you know that.
Hot side of line goes through a 50 Ohm resistor to the 70L7 plate pin. And through a 250 Ohm resistor to the heater pin of same. Filter caps were a pair of 16 mfd tubulars.
Complete kit without coils or tubes was $ 5.95 in 1941 .

Thanks for the reply. I was confused because in the schematic, there appeared to be three separate tubes. So I thought that there must have been an external power supply. After your replies, and reading the advertisement, I now realize that the diode tube is in the 70L7 envelope, The power supply is all there, and you added the line filter. I know this was commercially made, but this is the kind of stuff that I wish filled the Homebrew Radios and Equipment section. (Your complete rewiring and additions practically make it a homebrew!)

I bought this at a swap meet for parts but upon examination it looked like a viable radio. I initially thought this was a TRF and spent a lot of time searching the web for a "Two Tube TRF". This radio has absolutely no markings of any kind. It took me some time to figure out this was probably a kit from the 40's. That led me to Allied Radio where I found the radio in the 1942 catalog. That led to this thread.
Vince (above) sent me a scan of the pages from the Allied Handbook. I have since found one on eBay and ordered it. The radio had been modified and had parts replaced (most of the caps and some resistors). In this incarnation I have replaced all of the caps and some of the resistors ... again. I made a coil form and am about to wind a coil. The coil information on the schematic is a best estimate based on other regen's I found on the web.
Below is the corrected schematic.

Dave Ishmael – WA6VVL is probably the leading expert on anything related to Ocean Hoppers. http://www.amdx.info/OH2.htmlHis email address is at the top of the page. He has always answered any questions I've had and can probably verify your coil information. By the way, after scouring the 'net it seems like yours is the only PHOTOGRAPH of the two stage version out there.

Thanks for the link skyking. I found his restoration article during my search. He does picture perfect work. I love the "Square Wiring" . I may drop him a line when I start winding coils.

I think Allied should have stayed with this circuit rather than the later 12AT6, 50C5, 35W4 version.

Just as a curiosity I looked up all of the catalog entries for Ocean Hopper I could find. Here is the table. Attachment:

I also snipped all of the catalog entries for the kit.
