I have a friend that has an Admiral "Hi-Fi". It works, he's not trying to sell it, but it's been in the family since it was new.
He says it's a model 489, apparently it's a console. Says it works very well, and he read off the tube location chart - miniatures.
We're interested in how old it is, and if anyone knows any specific information about it. From his description it sounds like late 50's-early 60's to me.
------------------
It's not just a radio, it's history you can use!

Huggy Bear
It is listed in Photofact Folder which was published around 1958. I would say it was probably built in 1957 or so

Ralph/K2IPE
Former Admiral Dealer
------------------
I wonder if that "Hi-Fi" set is anything like my Admiral Hi-Fi 6/7/8. I bought this thing at an HVRA auction years ago with the intent of using it as an aquarium stand because of its' sturdy cabinet. Lo and behold, I find out when I get the set home that it has 20 tubes, three chromed chassis (15HF1-tuner, 4HF1-amp, 1HF1 power supply), and 6L6's in push-pull. The thing belts out the sound! Is this considered "high end" or what?
------------------
He did say it's got more than one chassis.
------------------
It's not just a radio, it's history you can use!

The pictures of my Hi Fi 8 have been uploaded in the photo gallery under "Admiral". For the life of me, I cannot find the instructions on how to copy those photos into one of these forum responses.
------------------
That's impressive! Looking at the pictures in the Gallery, it looks like Admiral was giving Magnavox, Fisher and a few others a run for their money with this unit.
Dave
------------------
vk2,
Thanks for moving one of the pics over to this thread! I guess my attempt to post pics within a forum response were not successful. I did the thing but I obviously did something wrong.
Alan,
The speaker location can be seen in another pic I posted in the "Admiral" section of the photo gallery. Looks like a 12" woofer and a mid range speaker. This set really sounds good.
------------------
A fellow at work, whose father was director of manufacturing at Admiral from the mid 30's through the 60's, told me that these cabinets were made at Arvidson Cabinet Co. in Rockford. They also had a set like this in their living room for years.
------------------
Jeff Aulik

I hope it is OK to say here that I am interested in buying a 4HF1 and 1HF1. These and the tuner 15HF1 were in the Admiral Console 258 which also had a turntable on a slide-out drawer, and 2-way speaker system with 15" woofer. The cabinet was huge and heavy with 2 doors covering the whole front. The most interesting thing is that the tuner appears identical to the Radio Craftsmen 800A which leads me to believe that the amp and power supply are Radio Craftsmen. The amp is triode connected push-pull 6L6 and the B+ power supply is on the separate chassis 1HF1. The circuit, taken as a whole, is probably very similar to the Craftsmen 500. Why the power supply would have been separate is a mystery, I don't think there was a space problem in the cabinet so it must have been a purist thing. Does anybody out there have more knowledge on this? Sid Smith who later went to Marantz is likely the designer of the electronics.
------------------
philstro,

i'm commenting just over 7 years since the last comment, but i wanted to say that i recently picked up one of these consoles at the thrift store and am currently in the process of restoring it. to answer your question as to why the 4HF1 amplifier portion is in a separate chassis than the 1HF1 power supply, it looks like the only way to get around the turntable and record storing compartment was to keep them separate, amplifier above the power supply. the amplifier and power supply chassis are the exact same size. i want to get the whole unit working but if worst comes to worst, i know i can mount the power supply and amp on a hardwood slab on their own. i'm going to make a new post/thread about this so that i can post photos and also ask for information and advice. please share if you can, and i'd also like to hear whether you ever got a hold of the 4HF1 and 1HF1 components you wanted, and what you did with them.

all the best,
zack
