Thx for the link, Dave! Be helpful in knowing if one of my TSM's has information on a set without having to get up and look, lol.

Excellent! This will help. Thanks for sharing the reference.

Greg, looks like your index only goes through TSM 131 or so.

This one includes all 159 TSM volumes: https://www.dropbox.com/s/x0q7ygvy2nvkv ... x.xls?dl=0

Got this from Radiosmoker in a January 2012 thread. ( viewtopic.php?f=2&t=180898&p=1539202#p1539202 )

I ended up creating a fresh spreadsheet using the TSM data found in Steve Sostrom's website:

http://web.eecs.umich.edu/~srs/Antiques/index.php

I liked Steve's data over the SAMS index because it lists the model variants as separate entries - for example, GE 710A/B/C are listed as three data lines instead of one.

Here are the stats I ended up with from 5,848 entries in 159 TSMs -

Number of Brands of Radios in all 159 TSMs: 216
Number of Radio Models in all 159 TSMs: 5,848
Average Number of Radio Models per Brand: 27
Maximum Number of Models for a Brand: 536 (ZENITH)
Minimum Number of Models for a Brand: 1 (54 Brands)

Number of TSMs: 159
Average Number of Brands listed in a TSM: 15
Maximum Number of Brands listed in a TSM: 29 (TSM-24)
Minimum Number of Brands listed in a TSM: 5 (TSM-130 & TSM-131)

Average Number of Radio Models listed in a TSM: 37
Maximum Number of Radio Models listed in a TSM: 110 (TSM-25)
Minimum Number of Radio Models listed in a TSM: 7 (TSM-130)

Top 10 Radio Brands with the Most Models in all 159 TSMs:
# of Models -Brand
536 -ZENITH
416 -GENERAL ELECTRIC
295 -ADMIRAL
268 -SEARS
243 -RCA
233 -WESTINGHOUSE
218 -ARVIN
173 -TRUETONE
170 -WARDS
149 -BULOVA

What's wrong with the paper Annual Index?

Looking over my library of Annual Indices (~1993-2008) radios in TSM-1 and in TSM-130 are listed, so no need for a comprehensive listing? Look up your radio in the annual paper index and done..... or am I missing something?

BTW, I never use the online Sams index. ZERO coverage of SEDs, Servicers, PCBs, and other Sams photofact "extras" - but they are in the annual paper indices. I just wish they had continued the POM listings like they had in the 70s and 80s - the "extra" schematics included with the monthly subscription/blue folders. They continued up into the early 2000s, but the POM index was dropped in the early 90s. It made you keep the blue folders with the index on them, quite unnecessarily.

Another BTW - AVOID the Sams 2000 annual index in paper form - the type is tiny!

Nothing wrong with them - except that I don't have them.

Hi guys,

I haven't finished the Sam's index just yet.....

IIRC, I've finished almost 60 issues. Each entry contains make, model number, TSM #, transistor count, transistor part numbers and any numbers or symbols printed on the board.

When you search on the transistor lineup, you'll likely see the same chassis for various makes and models. Same radio, different candy shell.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to access my library of TSMs and the Excel file resides on a now defunct laptop. Lot of time and work lost.

I suppose we could restart the project if everyone would be willing to commit to indexing ten or more issues each. Probably something we could coordinate using Google docs.

It's a thought...

BTW, I'm going vegetarian. You can't tempt me with cheeseburgers anymore. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

8 bucks on eBay, and no having to build a database of TSMs....and you get all of the other features of the annual index - cross reference for all other products, a set-to-year reference, manufacturers addresses (kinda obsolete....) and at-your-fingertips access - no computer needed.

Just seems like a lot of work for something made right by spending 8 bucks. And no, I don't sell annual indices or on eBay.

Handy - We built a similar database of Generic/HP/Tektronix/Fluke/Wavetek part numbers once....

All the more reason to keep a paper annual index handy. Even when Sams offered up their cross reference software and website, their paper indices offered more, explained in my long post above..

I can probably recover the excel file, but I still can't get to my collection of TSMs. Without access to my schematic library, it's a mute point anyway.

I'll likely get back to this project sometime in the future. Have other pressing issues right now.

Brian,

A paper copy of the Excel file would be a great waste of paper and purchasing an index for $8 is a waste as well since my database has so much more information than anything Sam's has done.

Good to hear from you Richard.

Mitch
