Nice job on Motorola! What you do about rectifiers?

I have smelled first hand the rotten egg stench of a failed selenium stack so I always replace them and add a dropping resistor to get the voltage reading to spec.
I replaced the 2 original Selenium Rectifiers with 2 1N004 Diodes. The screw holes that held the original Stack is what I used to mount the terminal strips for the E-caps and diodes.

Probably more so than Disney. But one of my all time favorites?

Latest update..
I have traced where a broken wire that was coroded at the tip connects, and, will be re-connecting it, as well as re-replacing a capacitor I accidentally dammaged. Then, I'll be trying it again. Likely tommorrow......
I suspect I'll be getting further. I'm just not sure the fil. winding for the damper is safe any more. This set seems to have had alot of issues, and, manny years of use.....
The picture tube had been replaced with a new Sylvania.

Bought a small bottle of gold leaf paint, and paint brush. Re-gilded the name placque on the front of the control panel. So, that looks much better.....

It wouldn't be original, but...

I have several NOS Amprex 6CJ3 / 6DW4B damper tubes. It shouldn't be too hard to make an adapter to put a novar tube into an octal socket, split the H-K connection and ground the heater (or connect it to B+ if it makes you feel better). It's good for 350 ma, heater is 6.3v / 450ma. I'm not sure what the H-K voltage rating is, but I'm certain it is better than anything availible in 1950.

Or you could always do a hi-pot test on the damper winding of the transformer....

Bill,

Memories are returning of that same problem with my uncle's set. He had a similar set that had kind of a square box grid in front of the grill cloth and no doors. It had a metal cone kinescope.

Dad had that set on his bench for a couple of years working on it on and off. Don't know what ever happened to it...

Huggy, thanks, but, no thanks. I like originality...

Don, Thanks for the understanding. Watch guys. In just a few min., I am going to show two more pictures. One shows my repair mod work on that corner of the chassis. Other shows a new view of front panel after re-gilding the emblem.. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Bill Cahill Next job, try it again....... :)

We're both a couple of originals, aren't we?

Very well then, hi-pot the power transformer if you don't trust it. It may not be cheap...or easy...but at least you'll know then.

Or take it out and have it rebuilt, specify the unusual insulation for that winding.

Bill,

And while they are re-winding that power transformer, don't forget to have them gold plate the bells. At what they may charge, the gold plating would be a drop in the bucket.

(Just fun'n!)

You know, if back in the day when this set was about two years old, can you imagine repairmen and engineers at RCA visualizing anyone going to all of this trouble? I guess that is what we are all about.

I am doing yet another Scott amp and while taking out the coupling and bypass caps, I tested them all. All test 100% good, on value and no leakage. Did I replace them? Yes.

Bill, keep up the good work!

I must admit, I'm nervous on this one. First, this set has had a number of serious isses.
Secondly, my nerves are no to good any more due to all that has happenned in my life, physically, and otherwise..I just don't know what this puppy's gonna do.....
  :? :)

Legs. Aren't they wonderful? My legs were in bad shape yesterday, and after church, I went to bed. Now, I've found yoke, and am thinking of a power up today after getting rest of day's chores caught up...
Hoping I get it playing.

Back on the set after a day checking picture tubes..
Decided to bite the bullet, and start trying hv circuits first.

I am going to install a new hv insulated fil transformer for the damper. After cleanning things up, I'll put the correct fuse back in, and, first, with horiz. out. removed, try the boost, and vertical circuits. Upon success with that, I'll try for hv. When I have some sort of picture on it, I can turn back to my audio problem.

O.K. I've now replaced the bad filament winding for damper with a new hv insulated power transformer. Just have a couple more things to do, then, I can try the set. I'll try the boost, first, then, try for hv.
Still no audio.
:) I'll post pics. when I have a new set availlable. I've only taken one more, so far.

I'd have to agree with you on this one. Too many things wrong, including someone had put in a ten amp hv fuse. NOT good.
This set has had some serious issues.
Financially, I'm in over my head on this one.

My doctor prescribed compression stockings. What a difference. They're expensive, though.

IIRC some of the RCA's fed a horizontal pulse to the AGC tube so that could be a problem getting a signal without proper AGC voltage.
