My RCA Mark IVD New Orthophonic from 1958 arrived at my house this afternoon. It is absolutely beautiful, and in near mint condition as the seller indicated. The AM/FM radio works absolutely beautifully in it. The changer will require a full service and a cartridge/needle replacement. As good as this works on FM, I am sure it has been serviced in the last dozen years or so. It's quite a light show, with the red pilot lamp on front, an interior light and lights on the radio tuner. She's a real beauty.

It actually sounds quite good on both AM and FM radio mode. The needle is shot and the cartridge is also probably bad, but I will pull the changer today and remedy all that this evening. The changer is going to get a full service. I'd better get to work on it. _________________ -Larry

OK Larry,
You think you can get something like that and not give us a little peek at the backside? Come on now, give it up.

I am truly hooked on the 50s blonde record players.
I got the changer fully serviced late this afternoon but it doesn't run right at 33rpm. 45 and 78 rpm seem just fine. The amp has some distortion in it if you try to turn it up too much, and there's scratchiness in the volume control. There's not much I can do about it until my caps come in, probably by the middle of next week. I'll try not to play it very much at all until it's recapped... I sure don't want to fry that big power transformer. _________________ -Larry

My SHF-6 is a "leggy" blonde.

I don't think I could find a better RCA than this one. I've got some more work to do on it, but it's absolutely the very cleanest RCA I've ever come across. The control panel plate was so clean I didn't even have to remove it...just wiped it down with some cleaner on a clean cloth. The changer is very clean too... not even any residue around the 10 inch indexing button. The deluxe platter is clean as a pin. The grill cloth and the brass "V" tell the story of how clean this player actually is. I don't think it was played very much in its 51 year old life. _________________ -Larry

Tonight, I started recapping the power amplifier. My caps from JustRadios in Canada got here in just three days!!!!! I replaced 8 of the 12 paper caps and ran out of solder, so I must make a visit to Radio Shack tomorrow. Wal-Mart doesn't even carry solder anymore.
Anyway, all of the caps under this chassis were original. It's hard to believe that this amp would still be playing with all of its original capacitors. It was a bit distorted, however, due to some leaky caps; and, the loudness control was very scratchy. _________________ -Larry

I got all the paper caps replaced Sunday afternoon, and I tried the amp in the player to see how it sounded. It still had some bass distortion in the music. I had hoped to leave the can electrolytics alone for awhile, but no such luck. I spent 5 hours this evening replacing the 8 electrolytics in the two cans. What a job!!! One of the can lugs had four different resistors running from it. I had to install two five position terminal strips underneath the chassis to mount the new electrolytics on. It was really worth it, however. The sound is now crystal clear.
Oh, this AM-FM tuner is one of the hottest tuners I've ever seen. I am picking up 30 or more FM stations very loud and clear. And I haven't even worked on the tuner yet. I still want to replace the few paper caps and a couple of electrolytics under the tuner chassis. I don't think it really needs it, but I'll replace them anyway to avoid troubles later on. _________________ -Larry

Well, not quite. I wouldn't have room in my small house for them all. If I had a mansion and were a millionaire, I'd find every single one of them......... _________________ -Larry

Tonight I pulled the tuner and recapped it too. It had two electrolytics and three paper caps. I recapped it to avoid problems later on. Now the recapping of the two chassis is finished. I only had a cheap non polarized electrolytic capacitor for a speaker crossover cap. Tonight I ordered Solen and Jantzen 8.2 mfd. crossover caps from Parts-Express.com. I'll use which ever one sounds the best.
http://www.parts-express.com/c ... -index.cfm
The 89T phono cartridge at 1.3 volts is over driving the amp a bit, so I'm going to order an 81T which is rated at 1.0 volts. The schematic calls for an 81T.
The two chassis' had a total of 15 paper caps and 10 electrolytics. I'm glad to have the recapping jobs completed. _________________ -Larry
