Well it is good stuff, and many of the requirements of a good gun cleaning solvent are very similar in some ways to what is needed for contact cleaning -- that is, not in new manufactured items but vintage contacts with decades of dust, grease, cooking oils, atmospheric contamination, sulfer, and I don't know what all.
Some of the modern (and pricey) products are not fazed by the crud on silver coin contacts. I'm not so sure a small amount of lanolin (optional, a lot of people leave that out anyway) would hurt anything -- it's the metallic form, not "soap" as such - and might be the stuff that cleans those contacts effectively. Dexron is often mentioned in radio circles in certain apps, and so is Kerosene.
A "modified" version containing Oleic acid in lieu of lanolin (or not) of this recipe might do well for really badly corroded contacts. If you look on the can or read the MSDS of commonly available products they contain much the same stuff but at a far higher price. |

| While we are on the subject, anyone familiar with CRC brand 2-26 electrical lubricant? I noticed it at Home Depot. 6 oz spray can is about $5.00. I sprayed alittle out of a can and is some kind of light bodied lube with hardly any smell. It claims to be safe for all plastics. I didn't buy it (yet anyway). |
