Over the years, I have noticed many but not all Canadian RCA Victor cabinet interiors appear to have a hand brushed white wash paint interior. Sometimes it looks pretty sloppily done with uneven coverage and splash on othe parts of the cabinet.

Why was it done? I saw today a white washed interior RCA Victor 10K radio from 1936 which was tagged made in Montreal. I have a 1956 RCA CTC5 RCA color set, tagged Camden, NJ but was modified in Montreal for 25Hz power for the Toronto market and it's cabinet had the sloppy whitewash.

Anyone have any idea? Have others seen the whitewash?

Maybe to help reduce differential moisture absorption of the wood and help prevent warping etc? Kinda crazy humidity swing between summer and -40. Painting/veneering only one side makes wood somewhat unhappy.

(no idea, never seen this, but also I have no wooden RCA).

Might just be an RCA thing, this random picture of your set from radiomuseum has the same thing, and it's probably not canadian? Hard to tell but looks more like sprayed inside to me, this one, with low res...

Hello, Maybe move this thread to the Cabinet Restoration section, or ask the question over there. Fred Taylor in Dallas can probably answer your question better than anyone. He has done quite a few RCA cabinets and can maybe recommend something similar or very close to it.

Someone years ago asked about hooks inside the RCA tombstone cabinet.
The conclusion was those cabinets were hung to dry in the factory.
If not painted, they are given a coat of stain, looks like.

I have seen many RCAs with the interiors painted. All the ones I have seen were painted with aluminum metallic paint. It could very well just be a gimick. Zenith did the same thing. Except theirs were blue.

That photo of the RCA 10K in RadioMuseum is a photo I posted of a radio I owned briefly. I currently have a 13K that's also whitewashed. Both American radios, not Canadian. I've also seen the metallic silver that bobwilson1977 mentioned, but the white color seems to have been used in different model year(s).

Photo of the inside of an unrestored Canadian General Electric E81 Tombstone uniformly painted light grey from 1936. CGE and Canadian RCA were putting out some similar radios at the time. Also has the hooks John mentioned above.

It is there to make it look pretty. This RCA was 50% flaked off. I left the yellowed shellac on the labels. I think I can live with it. 458
