My son came Home with this new record player console. The lady that gave it to him said her Dad cut the cord off because they kept messing with the radio. I took the back off and the cord is rolled up and tucked away real nice. Looks to be in perfect condition. No cracks or wire showing. Looks like good Ol Dad tricked his kids so they wouldn’t break anything.
The only info I can see is
Curtis Mathes 33-E-8 MX
Does anyone know or have any information for me. I’d like to bring her back to life someday. She looks to be in outstanding condition. Inside and out. Just a little dusty on her guts.
Thank You

Anything built by Curtis Mathes is top notch and collectible.

Go to curtismathes.com I think, a website dedicated to the history and variety of models.

This unit you got should be a decent performer but you will need the speakers. Never operate a tube powered
device without the speakers attached.
The electroilytic capacitors in the power supply will need to be replaced. In this unit, the power supply appears
to be sitting on the bottom shelf.

I find there's a schematic for a 33-C-8 MX in SAMS Folder 818-5.

https://www.samswebsite.com/en/photofac ... del/33C8MX

That may (or may not) be a very similar circuit to what you have. Maybe someone here has that folder and can help you figure out if that's the folder you need.

Thank you guys for the info. I forgot to send a picture of the bottom. There are 3 speakers. 2 Small one’s and a large woofer. Maybe about 12” or so. All 3 seem to be perfect. I’ll take the front cloth off tomorrow and get a better look from the front

I can’t believe I forgot about the other speaker in the back of my suburban.
Everything looks so clean.

For $6.25 shipped, you should grab the 12-page Service manual.

Hey Greg. I don’t understand where to look for the power supply chassis 14B68A.
I’m brand new to this hobby. It’s like a whole new language to me.

My Son found what you suggested Greg but that’s not it. That one is long. Mine is tall
Or are the chassis the same??

That gets back to what I was saying...

If someone had the Photofact folder, they might take a look at it, and see if they can tell whether it's essentially the same electronics.

How tall are the 2 cabinets?

The image in this instance is a representative image, as noted on the cover.

Just pull the trigger, it will be as near as damn it... :)
Greg.

oh... the power supply chassis... here's a clue - It's not high up!
Lol

look at the chassis numbers. They likely offered several cabinets with the same guts.
You will need to at least change out the filter caps in the power supply down below. The multi-section ones standing on top are no longer made, you buy the individual values and install them underneath. Get RADIAL lead version caps, they will install easier under the old caps. You solder the positive and negatives to the old, then snip the lugs off the old cans and move away. The leads will be plenty strong you dont need terminal strips or to unsolder all the old wires.
Also you'll need to clean all the controls with spray cleaners, test tubes and such. The record changer will need servicing due to hardened rubber idler wheels and dried grease on other parts and oils in the motor bearings.
Take your time. Its a unique and compact stereo ! I am guessing 1963.
GREAT find !

Thanx Mark. It’s is a cool look’n piece. I can’t find it anywhere online. Every Curtis Mathes I’ve seen are long and have a tv on it. I can’t find a 4’ tall console like this one. I’m wondering if it’s a CM record player installed into a random cabinet
I hooked that separate speaker up to a new stereo in my garage and WOW.... it sounds better than my Bose speakers. Ok well maybe not that good but extremely well. I was very surprised.
The turntable turns but slowly. I turned everything off and unplugged it. I just had to try

Everyone under age 50 expects to see everything on line... Taint so in this hobby for sure. There were just WAY too many products made to have even a tiny fraction of them on line !
Its a unique one, low production I suspect. CM was in Texas, a unique company I have not researched. They lasted 14 yrs or so I guess... 1958 to maybe 1972 it seems. A bunch of their stuff made it to the Detroit area in the 60's as I used to see it around. They specialized in the the long "oceanliner" stereo consoles, often with TV sets in them and those deals weighed about 350 lbs !
Anyways, that unit will need a fair amount of servicing but its all do-able ! Takes time though. Great source for idler wheels, cartridges and needles is http://www.thevoiceofmusic.com my pal Gary. You can also plug a Bluetooth into any aux input on that. or CD player or whatever. The TV and Tape are aux inputs.
DONT run it until you re-cap it and do all the stuff. I can make you a cap kit probably.

Just out of curiosity...

I don't see the expected bank of RCA jack's for input signals, maybe I'm missing something.

Looks like the rca jacks are on the top left of the chassis
Yeah mark. If you can make me a list I’ll be sure to change out all the caps.

Here's a link to that manual, but the paper version would be an ideal addition.

https://issuu.com/dnagent/docs/cm_service_manual

curtis-mathes.com
Write Glen Waters an e-mail and attach a pic or two. He might have some insight, but would love hear about this one. My feeling is that it is unique and therefore quite rare. It is all the more desirable without the old TV in it.
Don't remove the front unless it needs repair. These cabinets were built to last forever.
