I can only find a Facebook page for that guy you’re talking about. Should I just message him there or do you have an email for him??

You know, I'm looking at the chassis stamp with that weird, large 'E,' and I'm thinking it may originally have been stamped 33-C-8 MX. Then it was overstamped with that E for some reason.

You're right.

There is the curve of the letter "C" on the upper half of that "E"

To me it looks like it was done with a Sharpie

Some kid has been goofin' around with a sharpie, it's not paint.
The guy still hasn't purchased the 14-page ebay manual for $6.25

People ask for advice and choose to believe something else.
Makes you wonder...
Greg.

The service manual is in Vermont village, Illinois, a long bike ride from my cave!

I finally got the courage to work on this Ol Curtis Mathes.
Replaced all 40 paper caps and 9 filter caps.
Disassembled the turntable, cleaned out all the old grease & reassembled It using white lithium grease.
It spins like a top. Sounds pretty good too. Mute only problem I’m having is when I turn the selector knob
To the other 6 positions, I lose all power. When the knob is in the OFF/Phono position, everything works perfectly.
I have no idea what’s going on or what I can do.
I’ll be researching and studying until I can figure this out. I’ve waited too long to give up now.
Any info would be great.
Why am I losing power when I switch the knob???

I'm pretty sure the problem will be found in the selector switch. Each position has several contacts. I think you could check with your ohmmeter for continuity.
If not, with your voltmeter clipped to a terminal and power applied, you should see if the contact is connecting or not. Then thoroughly clean the contact points that are tarnished.
The schematic shows the switch and the terminals that correspond to each position. I think a copper strip carries a voltage, B+ will be DC volts, and the various contacts touch the strip as you change the setting.

Hey John. Can you break that down a little more for my experience level??
I know it has to be something simple but I just don’t understand how to test things yet.
What to test, how to test I have no clue.

I talked the the president of the Curtis Mathes Site and he said it’s a custom made console for some rich people that lived in a high end apartment. Hand made in Texas. Apparently The CM company only made those huge console units that weighed 200+ pounds. But someone wanted a smaller one so they payed big money to have this one made.
Hopefully I can figure out what’s wrong with it. My goal is to let someone have it so they can enjoy a nice piece of history

I worked in high school 1962 to 1966, college 1967 to1970 summers and holidays for a TV shop that was
a Curtis Mathes Dealer. Has being custom made console Curtis Mathes had a catalog of solid wooden cabinets
made in Benton, Arkansas, at that time you order what you liked.

The rich man in town order 4 units, the cabinet with the second speaker had a build in TV.

That a complete unit each of the 4 kid’s rooms that 8 cabinets.
Den got a 1967 Curtis Mathes Entertainment Center like the one on the Curtis Mathes Site by
Glenn Waters that for sale. All made out of solid WALNUT.

I had to install all of it before they got back from their Christmas 1966 trip.

After college 1970 I worked for Curtis Mathes has a line engineer for a year.

Remember when a car Dealer would order the car that you really wanted,
a 1963 ford custom with 406 and 4 speed baby blue for $2,600.

Thanx for that info Jimmie. I learn something new everyday.
This one seems to built very well.
Do you remember how the separate speaker plugs in??
I don’t see where it would go.
And there’s a balance knob so I don’t think I can run
wires from one speaker to another. That wouldn’t give
Me a left and right option

We have tenants in our guest cottage and almost a foot of snow against their door. If someone wants to look at the schematic and help out, that great. Otherwise I will try a bit later. Cheers.

IT been 50 years.

In your first picture on the right hand side above your hand there is four wires.
That plugs in to that term. strip the two centers ones have a wire coming from each output transformers
the other wire from the output transformers is solder to the chassis.
The two outer ones on the term. strip are solder to the chassis. The two terms on the right look to have wires go Down to the bottom of the
cabinet there is metal plate to right of the power supply that looks to have a a plug from there you need wires to
the term. strip on the Big speaker.

It 75 deg. and 100% hum a dit out side Houston,Texas today.

Greg says "Power supply chassis 14B68A mentioned on the cover of Photofact Set-818 folder-5"

Unless Spider loves beer can be more forthcoming with part numbers, etc., one cannot help too much in determining a possible SAMS document. This idea of figuring and doing comparing takes lot of time. Greg has provided enough. Pop for the SAMS and stop being concerned about physical outwards looks. That tuner chassis, and actually to me changer of not real quality and looks, and power supply could have been used on many styles of cabinet.
