Went to look at a radio and ended up buying 10 in a lot deal. Three or four are in pretty good condition, the rest are fairly rough and some incomplete. I'll get some pics up eventually so I can get some of the collective excellent advice hopefully.

I've only messed with one so far and it plays good on FM but can't get anything on SW. This is a pic online, not the one I bought. It's a German Electra, I have no idea of the vintage but guessing late '50's. Everything on it is in German.

Thoughts?

That resembles a Kaiser radio I have. Headaches from the pushbutton switches. Dirty contacts and difficult to access to get contact cleaner into. The reception right now is only fair on all bands. Mine probably needs stuff like caps and alignment but service data is scarce. If I was to actually buy another German set, I would get maybe one of the better known brands. I assume quality is somewhat brand dependent, as in US radios. Actually I wish that I had left this one at the show. The plastic coating on the case is cracking worse and looks impractical to refinish, unlike normal wood cases.

Depending on the price, buying radios in bulk like that can be a good deal. Even if some aren't worth restoring, they can still be harvested for parts

Very true. But in addition to harvesting them for parts, some of them may be nice radios which are candidates for restoration, in which case they will be an excellent learning experience.

That was my thinking, parts and rough enough that I can't hurt them too much.

I paid 150 bucks for the lot, I figured at 15 bucks each I'm probably not doing too bad considering some are in decent condition. Maybe I'm wrong?

I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow or the next day.

Art, you must have run into John DenHartigh here in Michigan... he sold off two or three 53' trailer loads of stuff, now he's right back at it, has two more trailers full from what I hear. He will probably be at the Kalamazoo Vintage Electronics Expo July 19-20. Also there is the auction of Bruce Eddy's estate April 13 here in Michigan. Look up Stanton's Auctions.
Anyone who would like more stuff should get to the bargain auctions at the Michigan, illinois or Kutztown PA shows.. lots of stuff CHEAP. Bring trailers or full size vans.

No, I think you may have gotten a good deal.
For you, the buyer, depending on the brands and condition, you got at least a couple of good ones, about 50 good tubes, plus at least 8 good output transformers and a bunch of IF transformers, tuning capacitors and knobs.

For the seller, it is a hassle to sell one radio, and to do it nine more times to make $150? Not worth the effort. I think he also got a good deal.

Thanks.

I still haven't got any pics but I had a chance to try some more of them. Three work good, well four I guess counting the German one I posted earlier, another one is battery operated so couldn't try it. Two more power up and hum loudly and one has no tubes in it. Two more to try.

Nordmende is a reputable German brand. Not junk at all. But they all get dirty pushbuttons.
For SW, you need a better antenna, most likely, but also the bandswitch will need cleaning. The SW contacts are tarnished from years of exposure to the air while it sat switched to FM.

Yeah, I'm getting a bit of scratchiness on the pushbuttons and bandswitch both. But man does this thing ever sound nice with Willies Roadhouse on SiriusXM playing through it. It seems to really like the mix on Hank Williams Sr.'s songs.

Finally got a few pics. The radio works but the record player is dismantled.

This one only has one tube out of six in it. Gonna start another thread about it.
