I wonder about AK R&D and whether they were always following the technology of other radio manufacturers. They seemed slightly behind the times of innovation if you look at where their radios were with respect to others, build quality aside. There are a few examples of radios that were nearly obsolete that were forced off the market or required production adjustments to stay competitive.
That said AK knew when to quit while he still had his fortune. RCA was already bringing out television at this time and there is no hint that AK was doing anything in this area.

I read somewhere that he also had an affinity for the Hollywood lifestyle as well as the Hollywood ladies. As the saying goes, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." In his case, it was to the West Coast.
