I just purchased a Stewart Warner 9161 model radio today. It is NOT a 9161-X! The whole cabinet, except for the knobs, is brown bakelite. I'd like to get an approximate age if possible. The serial # is 11556.

Hi Tubeless, welcome to the forum!

When you say it's not a 9161-X, do you mean "It's not a 91-61x," in other words, not 91-611, 91-612, etc.?

If it has a chassis label that says "91-61" on it, then it likely is a 91-611, 91-612, etc. The way Stewart Warner numbered their models right in that time period, their chassis was the first few digits (in this case 4), and then the cabinet style was the last digit. It seems that cabinets 1-4 were usually used for table models, and cabinets 5-9 were usually used for consoles.

If there was a table radio and a console that both used the 91-61 chassis, then typically the table radio was model 91-611, and the console was model 91-615. In both cases the label would say simply "chassis 91-61" or something generic. Often the only way to know the full model number is to find it listed in a catalog. Stewart Warner published schematics under the chassis number.

All that aside, show us some photos of your cabinet, chassis, and labels, and tell us your tube lineup, and maybe we can figure out together what you've got! Serial numbers are not generally useful, because very few manufacturers ever revealed what system they used for assigning their serial numbers.

Does it look anything like the one in this link? If so, Radiomuseum says 1952 on that.

Ah Ha! The number 9161 is printed on the back, then it appears there is a "B" that was stamped on there!
