The cabinet definitely looks like someone coated over it with some varnish or something. If it's just varnish, you could strip it all off using high percentage isopropyl alcohol which will leave the original lacquer finish intact and undamaged. Apply the alcohol with Old English at a ratio of about 50/50.

Thanks, I will do that to see what I am left with.

I suspect much of the cabinet is photo finish. I dont know if anyone know what panels are definitely photo finish?

20 cookies says that the control panel is the only piece of photo-finish.

As opposed to Architectural Veneer - - some Decorative Veneer can be as thin as 0.6mm

+1 on the 20 cookies. The panel of the radio is the only photo-finish you'll find; the cabinet is/was all done with toning and lacquer. Good luck, they are good performers and also look great in that deco cabinet.
