About a week ago I found an RCA 56x at the dump. I brought it home, plugged it in, and listened to the loud hum. I figured I would replace the electrolytic capacitors. Well that helped but I wasn’t getting any stations. So I replaced all the other capacitors in the radio. Now I can get a couple of stations but they are faint. The resistors are a little off but not too bad. So what are your recommendations as to what to do next to improve the reception?

Were you able to test the tubes? They can be very weak, and add to the problem. Have you worked on sets before?

No, I have not tested the tubes. Some of them glow. There are two black colored tubes that get warm but I can’t see if they are functioning. This is the first radio I have worked on. So, how do I go about testing the tubes or should I just get new tubes.

Do you have a tube tester?

You could buy an entire set of all 6 tubes, used and tested good, from findatube.com for $14+S&H.

The tube heaters on that radio are connected in series, so unless there is a short somewhere in the wiring, if one tube is heating, all the others are as well. Reception could be weak because of any of numerous factors. There could be a weak tube or two, resistors out of tolerance or poor IF or RF alignment. I always clean the tube pins and tighten up the sockets to make sure that the tube pins are making good electrical contact in the sockets.

I bought a whole new set of tubes, but as far as I can tell, it’s made absolutely no difference. I’m wondering about the wire coming out of the back of the radio. I’ve been assuming it is a ground wire, but it makes no difference to the reception if I connect it to a ground. Is my assumption wrong?

56X requires the loop antenna that came with it.

Yes the loop antenna is still with the set.

That wire in the back might be o extend the antenna for the short
wave band. Try a short length of wire on it and see if reception
improves. Otherwise trace it out and see where it goes. Its not
a ground..

The black wire hanging out is the SW antenna.
Did you remove the antenna wires when you replaced parts?
Did you try the SW band? I can get 3 strong Spanish stations in Florida
Do you have a schematic?
This is my 56X5 radio and you can verify your wiring is the same.

It may just need an alignment OR a cap was soldered to a wrong pin. For that, you will need to compare each part replaced with the schematic.
You will find this to be a fine playing radio once you get it working.
