Hi everyone -

Here are three AM/FM radios and I would like to know which has the best engineering of the three.

Additionally, do any of these listed have AFC?

1) Motorola 7-XM-22 -

2) Zenith 7H822WZ -

3) General Electric 408 -

Many thanks in advance!

I would say their all just about the same in overall performance. I think the Zenith is the best looking one. Personally I think the Fada 790 is better looking and better performing then any of these three radios.

The Zenith and G.E. each have an RF stage, so should perform better on sensitivity than the Motorola.

I would rate the 408 as the least desirable, I had 2 of them.

One of them went up in smoke, with sparks flying.

Hi.

Many thanks to all for the comments!

For the Zenith 7H822WZ - I think there is a tuning indicator lamp and a dial lamp.
Where might I find replacements?

Much appreciated!

:)

I would suggest looking at the service information, hopefully at Nostalgia Air. There should be at least Zenith part numbers for them. Then cross reference, and search electronic parts suppliers. Here's a list of some;

The Zenith and the GE are a little better than the Motorola, but I still wouldn't expect miracles from either of them. They perform about the same as an AA5 that just happens to receive the FM band as well.

These are before the introduction of AFC (the Zenith is a '48 model and the GE is a '50 or '51 if memory serves me correct), so expect to have to do some occasional fine adjustment of the tuning knob to keep listening to a station.

The GE dial does look nice illuminated in a dark room, though.
