Someone was selling this Zenith radio, 5-S-29.
Above the control knob that changes the different 3 bands, there is an "A B C " stencil.
Is this original to this radio? I don't see it on any other of the same model anywhere.
I don't remember seeing any type of lettering on any other radio from that era.

The letters A, B and C should be on the radio over the band switch knob. Most people refinishing the cabinet don't bother to put these back on. Here is an original unrestored radio.

The one I worked on looked like the A B C was put on with a rubber stamp. I'm 99% sure it was original.

The 5-S-29 is supposed to have the band IDs (A,B, & C) placed just above the band switching knob.

The good news, Walter, is that this radio was a good seller, a lot of them were manufactured, and they're not difficult to find. The bad news is, collectors almost universally like this model and many people want one, so they aren't usually found for $30 on craigslist. There's competition.

In the last 3 months, two of them have sold on eBay, one original for $160 and one 'restored' (whatever that means) for $499.

One way to get your hands on one is to save a search on eBay. Then eBay will notify you when one is listed. If you're a motivated buyer you can surely land one within about 6 months.

Good luck!
