I've had quite a few radios recently that use some sort of direct drive tuning mechanism with the rubber "idler" wheels. While I know radio daze makes a kit that people use, I've found it much easier to use heat shrink tubing as the rubber for the wheels. Building up the heat shrink layer after layer provides a really hard rubber surface for the gears to grip on. I always use the heat shrink that contains a sort of glue inside it that melts, otherwise I dunno how well they would stick to each other. Use something that's similar in size to the wheel, anything too large and the shrink tends to warp as it shrinks. Sometimes it takes a few tries to make sure everything goes down smoothly, but it works better than anything else I could find at my local hardware store. Hopefully this can help someone else out.
