This link from CBS News has instructions on how to opt out and hopefully keep bothersome calls to a minimum.

Here is the number for the federal Do Not Call Registry: 1-888-382-1222. This does work as I registered my cell and only get 1 or 2 a month. Im very much an introvert and value my privacy.

They don't get my real phone number....Like my SS#, I often just make one up when I deem it not necessary for them to have it.

I keep a shrill whistle next to the phone for unsolicited calls by telemarketers and they haven't called again after my treatment. I often wish I could see their faces when I cut loose.

I purchased one of these a few months ago--it has virtually eliminated the various telemarketing and other unwelcome calls.
It allows me to selectively or globally block phone numbers.

I have spam callers who use numbers in your area code or nearby area codes. They get hold of these numbers knowing that you are very likely to pick them up. Most of this calling is done thru the internet.

Dale, thanks for the Digitone recommendation. We are plagued with collection calls because we received a number that was used by a deadbeat family. Been almost three years and the calls still come in.
This should help a lot!
