I just bought a radio chassis which happens to be rather local.
I asked the seller if I could pick up rather than have it shipped. The seller agreed, but they said they couldn't change the auction to LPO. I ended up bidding and won, but there is no option I can see to drop the shipping charge on checkout.
I asked the seller if I could simply pay upon pickup, but I see that ebay is charging tax. This throws a monkey wrench in that idea...
I only see two options.... pay the shipping.... or cancel the sale.
Any ideas? I could call ebay, but I would have to wait until tomorrow as it is Sunday.

Is the tax so much that it would kill the deal?
Maybe ask the seller if he would cover or at least split the tax with you, deducted from what you'll pay him in person.

The tax amount isn't the issue. I'll pay it, no problem, its less than two bucks.
The problem is, if the seller agrees to cash upon pickup, how does it get paid?

Just forget the whole checkout thing and go pay him in cash. if he has a tax number then pay him the tax too. Its up to him to pay the tax then. He can mark it as picked up, I think, but as long as you dont paypal him the money he isnt required to provide a tracking number. Ebay will send you nasty emails asking you to pay it unless he marks it as paid on his end.
I suppose if he doesnt have a tax number you could pay it by filling out a form online or somewhere else if you wanted to.
Ebay makes it a LOT harder than it should be.

If you ask for an invoice before you pay, the seller can easily change the shipping cost to zero on the invoice.

Well, we made arrangements tonight to meet up. I paid cash and took it home. Very nice guy! He has an interesting radio collection. So, it ended well I suppose he will mark the transaction complete. I'll see soon. -Steve

Did you pay just the bid price, or did he add tax to it?

Since the winning price included shipping, was the tax based on the item or the total with shipping?

I see now the sale was cancelled. I just paid the winning bid in cash.
Before people start crying foul, I think it was an optimal solution. If ebay is going to make things difficult, then bad on them. He tried to change it so shipping wouldn't be charged and couldn't. I couldn't avoid paying upon checkout. It was something like $21.89 The purchase price was $36.10. A little more than I wanted to spend for a simple 4 tube chassis, but ok.

That is a bummer. Sounds like the seller was going over board trying to work with you. Sometimes your the hammer and sometimes your the nail.

I'm not sure I follow.
I picked up the chassis and paid the seller. Were both happy. The only one who lost out is ebay for being difficult. Yes, the seller went out of his way to be helpful and I appreciate that.

-Steve How did eBay lose? They are gonna bill him for their 10% on his next invoice. Maybe on the shipping as well. AFA any sales tax, ?

If canceled properly, the seller will not be charged. https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/fees- ... ts?id=4128If the seller cancels a sale in which he used eBay to display his offering, and actually did make the sale and receive funds because of that exposure, well then, how would his ethics be described?

I think this situation is different. It wasn't his intent to skirt ebay, nor was it my intent. He tried to remove the shipping charge and make it LPO, but he said ebay wouldn't let him change the auction. I figured he could cancel the listing and relist, or wait until the listing ended which would have the next day. However, someone else went and bid on it. I just decided to bid too, if I was outbid then fine, its over with, but I did win. Checkout doesn't allow you to change anything, so I was stuck.

If he wouldnt have cancelled I think he would have been charged fees on the selling price but not shipping as long as you didnt pay via paypal (I could be wrong on that with their constant changes).
Its possible ebay would have dinged you for non-payment, or not (for not paying via paypal). If he cancelled because buyer asked to cancel you will have a small ding there so dont repeat that action often. If ebay thinks the seller did something crooked they will ding him. Neither of you will know your dinged. Its just little things they keep track of.
he likely should have just forgotten about it, ebay would get their fees, you get the item, but I can understand all the confusion involved. The easiest way to avoid it in the future is to ask sellers before bidding if they allow pickup and if they do, to add that in the listing before you bid.
Ive never bought anything on ebay with local pickup but have sold that way. Buyers always have told me its difficult to do checkout even when local pickup is offered, and ebay keeps sending emails to pay even when they do it right.
Like I already said, ebay make things a lot harder than it needs to be.
They tell sellers when they lose money that its the cost of running a business, yet ebay itself does things to screw sellers over and over again so that ebay itself gets every penny and more.

As I said, (I hope I was clear enough) I did ask the seller if he could change it to add "Local Pickup" or make it "Local Pickup Only" before I ever bid. He said he tried but couldnt change it. Maybe he couldn't figure out how? I don't know. I'm probably going to avoid anything like this from now on. It is not worth the hassle... -Steve
