I just had a look at an Atwater Kent model 89 console in Birmingham, in the Maple and Cranbroook Rd. area. The seller is asking only $35 for it, but the cabinet could use refinishing, and I have too many projects on my list already (not to mention that my wood refinishing skills are terrible). The seller told me that he and his wife inherited this set decades ago from the wife's parents who were the original owners. I told him that I would post about his radio here because there were many Detroit area collectors who might be interested. The chassis appeared to be complete (with tubes) from my cursory glance, but for some reason, the speaker wires were cut off at the plug, which was in plugged into its socket. The speaker was present, but I did not look closely at it. I did notice that the dial numbers were quite worn. The radio is on craigslist now: link.

Thank You

Larry

I went ahead and picked this one up. They reduced it from $35 to $0. I figured the next step was the trash. Couldn't let that happen. Though I'm saturated with consoles, I made room for this one.

The cabinet is in excellent shape with no veneer issues or loose joints. The chassis is clean with no rust. Pictures were taken after dusting the chassis.

I already checked the tubes. All but one are strong with no shorts.

I always liked the style of Atwater Kent radios... very masculine.

I am glad that this radio will not be going to a landfill. I had spoken with the sellers, and the wife, whose parents were the original purchasers of the radio, really wanted it to go to someone who would restore and appreciate it. They weren't looking to make any money on it but didn't want to trash it. I didn't think that I would be able to do it justice.

I think my repro dials for the model 70 series work on this model too.

Mark, I'll probably get in touch with you once I dig into this radio.
