Holy c%#p. That looks like an experiment to see how many dials, switches and meters you can place on a radio  I think it was supposed to actually work, but it might defy the abilities of anyone except the original builder who is undoubtedly long gone.

I remember seeing that displayed in Alan’s barn. It was set into the wall. I thought it was just a random display of a collection of the panels.

It can’t be too hard to trace out a schematic for it and figure out the controls from there.

I trust there's an instruction manual that comes with that?

Its going to be a tough sell, few buyers will want to take that project on. On close inspection it looks a little disheveled in the back. It would take a lot of work to draw up a schematic and figure out if its even wired properly.

Well, it has provenance. You'd have to have a very specific kind of buyer. At least eBay is a good way to expose it to that buyer.

"A homemade "radio" is worth the sum of its parts"

Is there $3500 in that eBay offering?

Nope, not even close. I'd be very surprised if it sells for anywhere near what the seller is asking, on the other hand, I've seen buyers pay several times what a radio is worth so who knows?

If I had room for it I'd be interested, at a much lower price. It is an interesting set.

It said in 1985 it was modified to add more panels to it, maybe Alan had it up and running at that point in time.

I knew that panel looked familiar. John bought this at the Dec 5, 2020 Estes sale for $800 plus tax and premium.

Why bother calculating fixed component values when variable elements are available? :)

Alan was a pleasant, kind, highly skilled, author, and very helpful guy who lived on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. If you didn't know him as we did count it as an unfortunate loss to you. He had a lot of knowledge about everything. Just what the radio collecting fraternity needed and most of us feel privileged to have known him and read his books and articles. I personally knew him and his family for 50 years and they were all were as pleasant as he was. At his passing he probably got more accolades on here than anyone.

some info, he was one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Met him at the Weston meet when he was taking pictures for his book Radio Manufacturers of the 20's, and corresponded with him as well. He was always eager to help.
