As from the title, my problem. Neither motor engages when hitting play, FF, or rewind. Capstain motor working fine. I suspect the relays as the service manual suggests K1 relay, R1/K3/C5 for right reel, R2/K3/C20 for left reel. I will attempt to check this out further but was hoping someone with a bit more experience with this model could offer up some advice as to how the relays are energized. Please and thank you!

Thanks
Griz

Is that one of the Teac decks that has a remote plug on the back? It would be a 10 or 12 pin "octal" type socket. If there is a socket there, and no bypass plug in it, none of the controls will work.

Check that first. If the plug is missing, you can order them either as pulls from dead decks, or someone on Ebay is making them for about $15. That's way cheaper than finding the plug, figuring out the wiring, and making one.

If not, I'll dig into it deeper for you.

Did not know that ! There is no remote plug - I will look into that further but any part # would be helpfull.
Found that info in the manual after downloading it - getting one ordered.

Thanks for the info

Don't have the service data handy but does this model have tape sensor levers that have to be held up by the tape to activate the reel motors?

I have some TEAC machines and that is where I would start. Here are some pictures pilfered from an online auction for reference.

A picture of the back with the remote plugged in, a picture of the back with a dummy plug inserted and a picture of the front with the remote sitting in front.

Is this what you have?

Was it working previously...or is this a recent purchase?

I inherited it from my old friend that passed away a few years ago. I don't think it was working at the time but I know it worked at some point because I have some of his tapes.

I'm not sure why folks pull these plugs out. I've had several through the shop missing the bypass plug. All I can think is that they DO have the remote, or did, and did not send it in with the deck for repair. But you definitely need either the remote, or the bypass plug. Otherwise, none of the transport functions work, period. There's no point in going further until you have one of the above plugged into that socket.

Ampex machines are the same -- remote control or bypass plug must be in place.

Got the plug in today. Front panel controls are alive but do not work correctly. Stop works OK, Rewind (<<) works OK, Play (>) acts like fast forward, Fast Forward (>>) pulls up the pinch roller but the take up reel does not move. Seems like Play and FF are reversed. Suggestions appreciated.

Griz

Interesting, I just looked at the manual and the buttons on this unit have the play and FF reversed from the manual. I will get a picture posted tomorrow. Starting to wonder if the buttons somehow got swapped.

The top three buttons are FF-REW-STOP
The bottom three are REC - PLAY - PAUSE

When you hit play, does the pinch roller engage? A common problem with these is the pinch roller arm is frozen or sluggish due to glue that was formerly grease.

I came to the conclusion the play and ff buttons were reversed. Why i don't know, but easy to swap after taking off the front panel. I noticed the pinch roller wqs not turning when it engaged the capstan. I apparently forgot a washer and the cover piece was binding it up which in turn stopped the take up from turning as it pinched the tape.

Thanks to all for the inputs, working well now after lube, new belts etc.

Project complete
