I recently acquired a nice clean AKAI 1710 RTR tape recorder. The capstan motor would not run. The 2 uf start/run capacitor was dead (expelled electrolytic). I replaced it with a non-polarized capacitor of the same value and better voltage rating and the motor starts and runs.

The recorder came with a demo tape that is in pretty bad shape. It is stretched and won't track properly. It comes off of the capstan/pinch roller in play mode . Also, the pinch roller looks to me like it needs replacement. It is shiny and has lumps and bumps and I want to replace it. also, the push on tape reel holders are worn out.

Where can I buy AKAI 1710 parts?

Thanks in advance.

Joe

your pinch roller can and should be rebuilt before you go any further.

I use Terry's and they have done a great job on several:

Thanks cl350rr! I am preparing the roller for shipment to Terry. Do you know where I can get a replacement capstan drive belt? The capstan turns OK but I think it is stretched and too loose.

I might suggest Voice of Music:

I have bought from them in the past but not R2R belts

Check Ebay. I saw a few on there.

I found the belts on EBAY from seller westcoastresale.
The pinch roller was refurbished by Terry's Rubber Rollers: http://www.terrysrubberrollers.com/

I am very satisfied with both suppliers.
