Hi!

I am a new owner of a 1955 magnavox console with the turn table and stereo. I’m so excited about it, but the gentleman that sold it to me said that the volume was not stable, it would be super loud and then very quiet. Well, I get it home and there is no volume at all.

Can anyone give me some tips on where to begin with process elimination to try to repair? I took the back off and all of the wires are connected and there are no broken wires.

Thank you in advance if anyone can help me. I’ll keep googling in the mean time. :)

A unit of that age at the very minimum needs to have all the electrolytic and paper capacitors replaced before applying power, to eliminate the possibility of expensive damage occurring.

The cartridge which holds the needle is a very likely suspect at that age for issues where the volume changes up and down or disappears entirely. They were a high failure item even when these sets were new.

Thank you! I will google the capacitors. I had wondered about the needle, but since there was no volume on stereo I hadn’t gotten that far yet. Thanks for giving me a starting point. Hopefully I can find the parts and learn to replace them!

A 1955 model won't be stereo, it'll be Hi-Fi mono. Stereo units hit the market in 1958. In addition to replacing the caps you might want to De-Oxit the controls, especially the volume control.

FYI---You're about 10 years off on the mark AFA the era this is from. This is a solid state mid-sixties stereo Magnavox...I'm sure others here can peg the year better.

There should be a label or stamp on the chassis with the chassis number, which will start with "R". A separate amplifier chassis, if used, will be labeled "AMP". With those numbers, it can be positively identified, and service literature can be obtained.

I think I see a chassis number - might be R20401400 (or...401). I can probably supply the Sams service information (diagrams and parts list) in a week or two

Well, any signs of life? Such as dial lights, tuning meter that moves when you change tuning, turntable runs when you switch it on? I have zero experience with this vintage Magnavox, but many earlier ones had a speaker switch, and if it's set to "external" the internal speakers won't make a sound. The Volume and Bass / Treble controls may need to be cleaned, but they may be impossible to reach without removing the chassis. And a special Magnavox wrench is needed for that to remove the nuts under the knobs.

The partial chassis number I saw - need the full number to find anything:

I would absolutely NOT start by replacing a bunch of parts. START by cleaning all of the switches, and controls, with contact cleaner. All of the stuff they sell today is safe on plastics, even old ones, but check the label before you buy.

The shop I moonlight for does dozens of these for folks that want them preserved, and usually this simple cleaning brings them back to life. Then you can replace one or two caps at a time if you want, with the ability to test it each time your replace something before you proceed.

I think cleaning might be all that it needs, based on experience. I will say, we usually have to replace the crossover capacitors, but for the most part, the rest work long enough to see if the system is basically OK.

As for the turntable, usual problems are (mechanical) dried up and gluey lubrication, bad idler wheels, and (electrical) dirty contacts on the cartridge mount or output RCA cables.

Where are you located? Try contacting someone from one of your local radio, or ham, clubs for some on site assistance by experienced folks :)
