I’m searching for a sci-fi radio episode I listen to years ago. The story takes place in the future. The basic premise was about a guy who started out as a paid soldier, a soldier of fortune. The story was something like, he started out as an interplanetary fighter for hire. As time went on, his consciousness/mind was removed from his body and place in a fighting machine. This went for years and eventually he didn’t even know who he was fighting or what the cause was. His mind was bound to a contract and was sold and used in different conflicts from one galaxy to another.
I remember the idea being a little creepy but an interesting premise.
It’s been a long time since I listened to it and I only heard once so I don’t remember a lot, but I would really like to listen to it again.
I have looked in all the usual archives like DimensionX and X-minus 1. I’ve looked and listened in a number of other sci-fi collections but no luck. Does anyone remember this episode or where I might find it?

I took a crack at trying to locate it, but no luck. I like the premise, and would like to hear the story myself if it is ever located.

I've been listening, a little at a time, to LibriVox science fiction short stories (free). They are interesting and some are pretty good. They run anywhere from about 10 minutes to over an hour.

That kinda' sounds like this story from the series,"Mindwebs".

"But as a Soldier, For His Country
Episode:
Duration: 30 min
Genre: Speculative, Sci-Fi
Available for Listening Booth: Y
Story by: Stephen Goldin

Two career soldiers agree to re-enlist and enroll in an experimental program—they get a couple of months' leave and a bonus, and when they return to base they are cryogenically frozen until needed for the next war. When resurrected, they fight another war and then re-enlist... fight another war and re-enlist. Eventually science progresses to the point where are no longer frozen. Instead, their minds are recorded and their bodies are reconstructed when needed."

Thanks for your post.

"But As A Soldier, For His Country" is the story I was looking for.
I don't think I would of found it without your help.

Listening to the story for second time I found it to be even more disturbing...

I found it on "Internet Archives"
MINDWEBS - Michael Hanson's official tape archive.

Thanks again!

Curious but wasn't there a Soldier of Fortune TV show around the late 50'S early 60's?
