I guess the Charleston must have popular back on the music variety shows. Few of those type shows episodes survive compared to drama, I guess.
The audience watching the theater cartoon probably knew this song back in that day.

The Charleston was mostly a dance of the 1920s flapper era and we have very little OTR from that decade. Warner Brothers was also adept at using old songs in their cartoons because they owned the rights to those songs and didn't have to pay royalties to use them. So you hear lots of old songs in those cartoons.

The Charleston also became part of the Lindy Hop, which was a dance of the 1930s and 40s. Music was played at night on the radio in the 1930s and 40s by their covering what was called band remotes, where they featured 30 minute shows of different bands from places like the Aragon Ballroom, Frank Dailey's Meadowbrook, Glen Island Casino or the Blue Room of the Hotel Lincoln. The names alone are magic. These were often later at night, like 10-11pm. Lots of recordings of these band remotes still exist and make great listening if you just want to hear big band music.

Thanks! I see them listed in the radio ratings of top shows but yeah I never find the music OTR programs, like the Rudy Vallée show or whatever that was.

Sylvester Cat sings "buck dance, wing dance..." as if those are nothing good at all compared to the Charleston. But I went to Youtube and the gals dancing the buck dance seems the same as the Charleston to me (I have way too many left feet).

If she just swings her arms more, it looks Charleston to me...

There's a pirate radio station in Europe that plays Charlestons on hf.
