Looking for a couple of V-70-D tubes. A strange tube that didn't achieve popularity. One of them in my Globe King transmitter has decided it wants to be a snow globe instead. These are usually or always military surplus WWII era tubes by United and used to be common as dirt after the war until 1950's children used them as play hand grenades and destroyed them all. There is a Taylor substitute for this, a T-something, but I can't remember the number.

I will investigate. Thanks! A couple of the big tube vendors claim to have them on their website lists but when an order is initiated, it's "Oh sorry, out of stock."

EDIT: I see an 812H is made by United, maker of the V70-D. Apparently the "H" means it has a metal skirted base, as on the V70-D, unlike the standard RCA 812.

Not sure about the metal base aspect, but I believe the chief difference
between 812/812A and 812H is that the H-suffix version had a carbon
anode. Reminds me of 813 tubes, looks much more rugged than the
usual finned (tungsten alloy?) types. Also they had a method of gettering
that avoided depositing anything on the inside of the glass envelope.
Instead, all the gettering was confined inside of a tiny glass tube
hanging off of the internal glass stem. It's a pretty tube...

I saw a bidding war on Ebay perhaps a year or two ago. Price ended up
around 50 dollars for a NIB 812H tube.

I may have one or more RCA 812’s. I’ll have to check on the suffix although the one I had in my hands yesterday had a phenolic base.Mouse house box, but unused tube (I think).

Peace,
DrRick

Haven't tried yet. I was waiting to see if any original V70-D's showed up first because it would save me having to replace the filament transformer. If not I will start work on that.

Can you get by with one or do you need two?

One of mine has grid elements rolling around all over the envelope inside, The other looks visually OK and is possibly still good. This is of course beyond tube tester type evaluations, so it is possible I could get by with one replacement and still use the other one. As far as running just one in the PA, that gets a bit more complicated.

Why I asked is that there is one is one in my display collection of over 1100 tubes and also have the T-55. If I were younger I would not sell it but I am getting older and the family will not keep my entire collection. I will get it down and asses the condition and get back to you.
