Hi Just pulled the Chassis for a Crosley 1117.
First thing I noticed was a grid cap wire loose on top and stuck through a chassis hole but not connected to anything below. The schematic shows 6K5 which shows using a grid cap, but what is in the radio is a 6J5. It also looks like the socket was re-wired..
Can anyone shed some light on this one?

Both tubes are triodes. Sounds like a prior owner didn't have a 6K5 tube (which has a top-cap grid connection) so they subbed in a 6J5. Beyond that, you'd need Kreskin to provide a reading.

Both tubes are the same except for the pin out.

Well thanks
I never understand why manufactures would re-design the wheel when theirs already a wheel out there they can use.

All kinds of tube substitutions out there.
.
I suppose when the same company makes both the tubes and radio's (or Partners), Lets make it where we get to sell the tubes.

Some radio engineers may have had a preference for one type over another, and there's also the cost factor when you can buy truckloads of a specific tube for 3 cents or 5 cents less than another type.

But overall during the tube era, there were huge numbers of types that are totally redundant and should probably never have been manufactured. This is painfully obvious when you fast forward into TV tubes.

The characteristics of 6J5 vs 6K5 are different with 6K5 having 3.5X gain atvantage. No doubt will work if necessary, but max volume will be reduced.

BTW, a 6B6G tube will sub for a 6k5G, it just has two extra diodes you dont need. Being a G type it will fit into the original philco tube flange.
